Whataroa is a tiny settlement that punches above its weight for nature lovers. It sits at the foot of the Southern Alps in a glacial valley bounded by the Whataroa River to the north and the Waitangitaona River to the south.

Food
The Whataroa Store is the only food option in town. Self-catering or eating before arriving is recommended for any special dietary needs.
Money
Whataroa is a cash-dependent town with no ATM. Carry New Zealand dollars (NZD) from larger towns. No currency exchange facilities exist.
Transport
State Highway 6 is the only road route. Intercity buses stop at the Whataroa Store twice daily, around 9:45am (northbound) and 4:20pm (southbound). No local public transport exists.
Weather
West Coast weather is notoriously changeable. Dress in layers and be prepared for rain at any time of year. Summer offers the most stable conditions for outdoor activities.
