Why Go

Lake Tekapo is a small resort village on the shores of a stunning turquoise glacier-fed lake in New Zealand's Southern Alps. The village is internationally recognized for its exceptional dark skies, making it the premier stargazing destination in the Southern Hemisphere. Unlike busier tourist spots, Lake Tekapo remains compact and uncrowded, offering a peaceful base for exploring the Mackenzie Country region.

Understand

Surrounded by mountains and far from city lights, Lake Tekapo has cloud-free skies that make it ideal for astronomical observation. Strict local light-pollution laws require all exterior night-time lighting to shine downward rather than upward. The area is seeking World Heritage status as the world's first starlight preservation area, recognizing its commitment to preserving natural darkness.

Getting Around

Lake Tekapo is compact and extremely walkable. All major attractions are within walking distance of one another. There is no public transport available in Lake Tekapo, so visitors need their own vehicle or use taxis for longer distances.

When to Go

The Peninsula Walkway hike is closed from October to December for lambing season. For stargazing, avoid the full moon—between five days after full moon and ten days before it provides the darkest skies. Summer (December-February) offers longer daylight hours for hiking and outdoor activities, while winter (June-August) brings snow sports opportunities at nearby ski fields.
