Overview
Villa O'Higgins is a tiny frontier town of 600 people at the southern terminus of the Carretera Austral, serving as the gateway to Lake O'Higgins and Campo Hielo del Sur glaciers. It is the only border crossing point between Chile and Argentina in this remote stretch of Patagonia, making it essential for through-travelers and adventure seekers.

Before you go
Connectivity
Phone service is satellite-based and spotty. WiFi hotspots are unreliable and slow. The library has free internet with time limits. Do not depend on consistent connectivity.
Food
Few restaurants; minimarkets for basics. Produce is scarce and food is expensive. Consider accommodations with kitchen access for longer stays.
Money
There are no ATMs in Villa O'Higgins. Bring sufficient cash from Cochrane or El Chaltén. Prices are high due to extreme remoteness and limited supply chains.
Packing
Bring all trekking and camping supplies from Cochrane or El Chaltén. White gas and some supplies are rarely available. Cigarettes are hard to find.
Transport
The town is walkable. The Carretera Austral is the main road. Boats to Candelario Mansilla run several times weekly November-March via Hielo Sur.
