Why Go?

Tarapoto serves as the "City of Palms" in Peru's San Martín region, sitting at over 350 meters elevation in a cloud forest that keeps temperatures cooler and humidity lower than typical lowland jungle. The area offers spectacular waterfalls like Cataratas de Ahuashiyacu, wildlife reserves such as Reserva Alto Chiclayo, and access to both Amazon jungle and highland destinations. Few tourists visit compared to Cusco or Lima, so travelers are noticed and generally receive warm welcomes from locals in this commercial center of the district.

Getting In

Cadete FAP Guillermo del Castillo Paredes Airport (IATA: TBP) is located 4 km southwest of town via Jr Jorge Chavez and serves as the main airport of the San Martín Region. Daily flights connect Tarapoto to Lima, though service can be somewhat unreliable. By land, buses connect Tarapoto to Moyobamba (2 hours), Yurimaguas (2.5 hours on good roads), and other regional destinations.

Getting Around

Mototaxis—rickishaws with motorcycles welded to the front—are the most common form of transportation in Tarapoto. Automobile taxis are available but less common. Tourists should always negotiate the price before entering any vehicle to avoid overpaying. Mototaxi drivers can be reckless, so don't hesitate to ask them to slow down if needed.

When to Go

Due to its cloud forest location at over 350 meters elevation, Tarapoto stays cooler than lowland jungle destinations. Temperatures generally don't exceed 95°F (35°C), and humidity is more manageable. The dry season (May to October) typically offers better conditions for outdoor activities and waterfall visits, though rain can occur year-round.

Where to Stay

Accommodation options range from budget hostels to mid-range hotels. La Posada Inn is centrally located 50m from the Plaza on Jiron San Martin with wifi, hot/cold water, and a good restaurant. Centrika Tarapoto (S/.89) offers air conditioning and complimentary breakfast. Hotel La Patarashca (S/.150) features a jungle-lodge atmosphere with pool, restaurant, and free breakfast. Budget travelers can find dorms at Albergue El Achual (S/.20-45 per person). Many hotels lack hot water and air conditioning—always ask before booking.

Food and Drink

VIDAX Restaurante (Jr. Nicolas de Pierola 135) offers Peruvian and vegetarian buffet options for just S/.10. For nightlife, the Morales district has several discos including Anaconda, Aqua, and Bunker, typically open Thursday to Sunday. Near Plaza de Armas, Calle Bolognesi and Calle Lamas have bars with music, and the musmuki bar near Scotiabank on Calle Moyobamba serves jungle-themed cocktails. La Posada Inn has a well-regarded restaurant attached.

Things to Do

Cataratas de Ahuashiyacu features a waterfall with a S/.3 entrance fee—nice but the swimming area is small and crowded with locals on weekends. Cataratas de Huacamaillo requires a mototaxi to the trailhead plus a guide recommended for the multiple river crossings; entrance is approximately S/.3. Reserva Alto Chiclayo (S/.80 with guide) preserves the Rio Chiclayo with opportunities to spot poison frogs. Wayra Sacha is an organic forest "chacra" where biologists lead wildlife walks and overnight stays are available. The Tabacalera del Oriente cigar factory offers tours, and walking the Shilcayo River along the takiwasi road provides a pleasant 2-3 km urban escape into forest.

Safety

Tarapoto maintains a "small town" atmosphere and is considered safer than larger Peruvian cities like Trujillo, Cusco, and Lima. Europeans and North Americans are not typical targets of crime. However, standard travel precautions apply—negotiate taxi prices before boarding and be cautious of reckless mototaxi drivers. The area near the Plaza de Armas is generally safe for evening activities.

Connectivity

Tarapoto has many Internet cafes and most hotels offer wifi. Peru uses Types A, B, and C electrical plugs (same as US/European standards). Mobile coverage is available from major Peruvian carriers. La Posada Inn and Centrika Tarapoto specifically mention wifi availability for guests.
