Overview
Sumbawa is one of Indonesia's less-visited major islands, offering world-class surfing at spots like Yoyo and Scar Reef, pristine white sand beaches, and the dramatic volcanic landscape of Mount Tambora. The island remains largely undeveloped for mass tourism, meaning fewer crowds and more authentic interactions with local communities, though this also means limited tourist infrastructure and basic amenities.

Accommodation
Budget tourist facilities are scarce outside surf camps and larger towns. Sekongkang has the most options for surfers. Book ahead where possible.
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is limited in rural areas. WiFi is primarily available at hotels in towns. Do not expect reliable internet throughout the island.
Food
Local specialties include Ikan Bakar (barbecued fish) and Ayam Taliwang (spicy grilled chicken). Many dishes are very pedas (spicy).
Transport
Transportation on Sumbawa is challenging; book combined ferry-and-bus tickets to avoid being stranded at ports. The Bali-to-Sumbawa overland journey takes about 15 hours.
Weather
Dry season (April to November) is dusty with strong winds. Rainy season brings lush greenery but may disrupt transport.
