Why go?

Sogamoso sits at 2,492m elevation in Boyacá department with a population around 130,000. It's a practical base for exploring Colombia's highest natural lake, colonial mountain towns, and thermal pools without the crowds of more touristed destinations. The city has archaeological significance as a former Muisca settlement, with the Sun Temple and a well-regarded archaeology museum showcasing Chibcha civilization artifacts.

Getting in

From Bogotá, catch a bus at Portal Norte for the 4hr 30min journey costing COP$35,000 (October 2022 rates). From Tunja, frequent buses cover the 1hr 30min route at COP$10,000 (October 2022). The bus terminal is within walking distance of the city center and most accommodations.

Sogamoso is compact enough to explore on foot. Local buses connect to surrounding towns and attractions. Taxis from the bus terminal to central accommodations run around COP$3,500.

When to go

The highland climate means cool temperatures year-round. The dry season (December-February) offers the best conditions for day trips to Lago de Tota and trekking in surrounding páramo zones. Iza's thermal pools are popular year-round but especially on Sunday afternoons when locals gather around the central plaza.

Where to stay

Accommodation clusters near the main square and between the bus terminal and city center. Budget options include Hostal Cazahinita (COP$35,000 per bed directly booked) and Hostel Finca San Pedro (COP$25,000 dorm, COP$50,000 double) on a farm 2km outside town. Hotel Cristal offers doubles with private bathroom from COP$45,000-65,000. Most budget accommodations include breakfast or have shared kitchen facilities.

Food and drink

Local specialties include trout (particularly famous in Aquitania near Lago de Tota) and regional sweets from Iza. Refajo is the local drink of choice—a mix of beer, apple soda and malt. Firavitoba is known for excellent bread, and Nobsa offers ruana (traditional wool ponchos) and handicrafts. Main plaza areas have cafes serving feijoa-derived products in Tibasosa.

The Museo arqueologico de Sogamoso Eliécer Silva Célis (Calle 9a No 6-45) displays Chibcha civilization artifacts including mummies, with outdoor reconstructions of indigenous villages and the impressive two-story Templo del Sol. Outside town, Lago de Tota at 3,015m is Colombia's highest and largest natural lake, with Playa Blanca white sand beach between Aquitania and Tota. Iza's thermal pools cost COP$9,500 for the day. Agama Yoga at Finca San Pedro offers weekend workshops at COP$30,000 per class. The Marques de Puntalarga Winery at km 7 on the Duitama-Nobsa highway sits at 2,600m—South America's highest commercial winery—specializing in award-winning white wines and Riesling from COP$40,000 per bottle.

Day trips

Colonial towns accessible by easy bus rides include Tibasosa (COP$1,000), famous for feijoa fruit products served in juice, sweets, ice cream and liquor. Beautiful Monguí sits high in the mountains with a magnificent cathedral and monastery—access point for Páramo de Ocetá—and celebrated 400 years in 2001 (bus COP$5,500). Iza offers thermal pools and sweets popular Sunday afternoons. Firavitoba has great bread, while Nobsa features ruana and wool handicrafts. The Lago de Tota circuit includes Aquitania (trout capital), Tota, and Cuitiva with spectacular scenery.

Go next

Tibasosa is famous as the world capital of feijoa fruit with well-conserved plaza shops selling sweets, ice cream, liquor, and arequipe. Monguí is a beautiful colonial village set in the hills with access to Páramo de Ocetá. Both are easily reachable by bus from Sogamoso.

    Hostel Finca San Pedro

    This newly opened family-run posada is on a 2-hectare farm on the edge of Sogamoso. There is a fully self-contained cottage, it's best to email the Finca for prices and availability. All of these prices include breakfast with coffee, aromatic tea, toast and fruit. Also included is free internet and Wi-Fi, hot water, laundry service, a safe and a personal sauna. Services including massage, aromatherapy, music and fire therapy are also available. Best to email prior to arrival to ensure availability. Once in Sogamoso, a taxi from the bus terminal will cost around COP$3,500. Otherwise, the local bus heading to Aquitania runs straight past the finca, keep a look out for the finca's yellow archway.

    Run by Juan who's been trained for more than 7 years around the world, this is South America's first and only Agama Yoga School. He gives Spanish and English weekend Yoga workshops of introduction to Yoga in Colombia and he hopes later to bring these teachings to other Spanish-speaking areas and communities.
