Why Go?

Bucaramanga is a medium-sized city home to nearly 1 million inhabitants in the metropolitan area, serving as a major commercial hub in northeastern Colombia with significant trade with Venezuela. While not a huge tourist destination like Cartagena or Santa Marta, it is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and ancient towns with rich history, making it worthwhile for travelers seeking an authentic Colombian experience away from mass tourism.

Bucaramanga is known as 'la ciudad de los parques' (the city of parks), offering numerous green spaces throughout the urban area. The city has a pleasant climate with temperatures ranging from 19-28°C year-round. The most popular modern zone is Cabecera, featuring malls, cinemas, restaurants, and shops. The center gets crowded on weekends with good shopping bargains for clothes and shoes.

Get In

Palonegro Airport (BGA) is about 19 km west of town (45 min) near Lebrija, serving domestic flights to Bogotá, Medellín, Cúcuta, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Santa Marta, and Yopal via airlines including Avianca, LATAM, Satena, Copa Airlines, ADA, Wingo, and EasyFly. There are international non-stop flights to Panama City and to Fort Lauderdale (USA) with a layover in Cartagena. La Terminal de Transportes de Bucaramanga is the main bus station for regional and long-distance routes.

Getting Around

Local buses labeled 'Trans Giron' and others can be hailed from anywhere in Bucaramanga on Carreras 15, 22, 33, and other main avenues. Taxis are readily available. The #6 bus (Morro) runs from the center to Parque del Agua, where buses to Pamplona and Cúcuta depart.

Bucaramanga has a relatively stable climate year-round with temperatures between 19-28°C. Rainfall varies by month, with March (137.1mm) and May (139.7mm) being wetter, while December (66.6mm) is the driest month. The city can be visited any time of year, though travelers should be prepared for occasional rain showers.

Where to Stay

The main accommodation areas are around Cabecera and the city center. Hotel Asturias on Carrera 22 offers single rooms from COP$45,000 with hot water, cable TV, and free Wi-Fi. Kasa Guane Bucaramanga (KGB) on Calle 49 offers dorms from COP$20,000 and singles from COP$35,000 with an excellent location and shared kitchen. Food and Drink

Traditional Santanderean dishes include Mute (thick soup with beans, corn, potatoes, and various meats), Pepitoria (rice with special meats), Cabro (goat meat), and Fritanga (assorted deep-fried sausages, yuca, potatoes, and steak). Culonas (Hormigas Culonas - toasted leaf-cutter ants) are a unique regional delicacy found nowhere else in Colombia. Popular eateries include Desayunadero Tony, Desayunadero El Viejo Chiflas, Restaurante Mercagán, and Restaurante Bella Napoli. Pineapples from Lebrija (35-40 min away) are famous for their size and sweetness. Bar concentrations are found at Parque Las Palmas (Calle 44 con Carrera 29), Calle 52 between Carreras 34-35, and Carreras 34-35 between Calles 47-48.

Things to Do

Visit the numerous parks for which Bucaramanga is famous. Practice extreme sports including paragliding in Ruitoque (best place in Colombia), rappel, and kayaking. Colombia Paragliding offers tandem flights and courses from Ruitoque. The colonial town of Girón is 25 minutes away by Trans Giron bus. Panachi (Chicamocha National Park) offers spectacular canyon views accessible by cable car. The Mesa de Los Santos area is known for adventure sports.

Bucaramanga is known for shoe manufacturing, offering good leather products at inexpensive prices. The city center gets crowded on weekends with many shops offering bargains on quality clothes and shoes. Various shopping centers are available throughout the city.

Day Trips

Girón is a small pretty colonial-style town just 10 km outside Bucaramanga, reachable in about 25 minutes by bus. Panachi (Chicamocha National Park) features the new aerial cable car among the longest in the world with fantastic canyon views. San Vicente de Chucurí (2.5 hours away) is the cocoa capital of Colombia, offering cocoa tours with local farmers and visits to caves and waterfalls. The Mesa de Los Santos area offers adventure sports and scenic landscapes.

Go Next

On the road to Bogotá are excellent spots including Chicamocha Canyon, and the towns of San Gil, Socorro, Vélez, and Barichara. San Vicente de Chucurí produces over 56% of Colombia's cocoa with direct buses every hour. Girón is a short 10 km trip. To reach Pamplona or Cúcuta, take a buseta (COP$20,000-25,000) from Parque del Agua using the #6 bus from the center or a taxi.

Budget accommodation available from COP$20,000 for dorms. Prices are slightly higher than neighboring cities but good value.
