Overview
San Pedro Sula is Honduras's industrial heart. Travelers use it as a transport hub for the country's north.
Languages: Spanish
Why go?
San Pedro Sula is Honduras's industrial heart and second-largest city, serving as a major transit hub for the north. Unlike the more picturesque colonial cities of Comayagua or Tegucigalpa, it offers a modern urban experience with the country's best airport connections. Travelers use it as a base for Copán's Maya ruins, Caribbean beaches at Tela and Puerto Cortes, and outdoor adventures at Cusuco National Park and Lake Yojoa. The city has solid hotels, restaurants, and nightlife in Zona Viva, making it practical for multi-day stops.

Getting in
Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport (SAP) sits 8-16 km from downtown and is one of Honduras's main international gateways, served by major carriers. La Gran Central Metropolitana bus station handles intercity connections across Honduras. Direct buses run to Tegucigalpa (5-6 hours, approximately $15-20), Copán Ruinas (3-4 hours), and Tela (1.5-2 hours). Taxis from the airport cost roughly $5-10 to the city center.

Getting around
The downtown center is compact enough to explore on foot. Taxis are plentiful and cheap, with most rides within the city costing $2-3. Car rental is available for those planning to explore surrounding attractions. The Circunvalación ring road makes navigating between zones easier.

When to go
San Pedro Sula experiences a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 19-35°C (66-95°F) year-round. The dry season from November to April offers the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing. June through October sees heavier rainfall, though afternoon showers often clear quickly. Carnival celebrations occur in March or April, bringing parades and festivities.

Where to stay
Zona Viva is the main hotel district, close to nightlife and restaurants, though it sits somewhat removed from downtown. The area near Central Park offers more budget-friendly options with easier walking access to sights. Hotels near the airport suit travelers with early or late flights. Budget accommodations run $25-50/night for private rooms, while mid-range hotels average $50-100/night.

Food and drink
Local chains like Pollo Campero (Guatemalan fried chicken), Pollos el Hondureño, and Power Chicken offer authentic Honduran fast food at very affordable prices ($2-5). Pamplona in Central Park serves budget meals including chicken soup for $1.50, with air conditioning for relief from downtown heat. Antojitos Mexicanos near Circunvalación draws crowds with cheap tacos, enchiladas, and live Mariachi performances in the evenings ($2-5). Upscale options like Don Udos on Boulevard Morazán serve international dishes and wine ($8-15). Zona Viva has the highest concentration of bars and restaurants, while City Mall food court offers diverse fast-food choices.

Things to do
The Museum of Anthropology & History (3a, 3 y 4 Calle No; daily 10AM-4PM) displays pre-Columbian pottery and colonial artifacts, though Spanish knowledge helps as few items have English labels. People-watching at Parque Central offers a glimpse of local life. Nearby Cusuco National Park provides hiking, bird watching, rappelling, and camping. Day trips include Copán's Maya archaeological site, Taulabe caves, Pulapanzak Waterfalls, and Lake Yojoa for bird watching and boat rides. Cinema complexes at Mall Multi Plaza, Mega Plaza, and Metro Plaza show movies in English with Spanish subtitles for $1.20-2.50.

Safety
San Pedro Sula has historically had serious crime issues, earning the dubious title of "murder capital of the world" until 2016. Gang violence affects certain neighborhoods, particularly in outer areas that fall off tourist circuits. Parque Central should be avoided after dark. Take registered taxis rather than walking after sunset, even for short distances. Only walk within Zona Viva's immediate radius at night. Keep valuables discreet and stay aware of surroundings.
