Get In
Buses to Samaipata depart from Santa Cruz, with the road being scenic through mountainous terrain. There is no bus terminal in Samaipata itself; bus tickets can be purchased at a laundry shop on Calle Campero across from Hostal Andoriña. Alternatively, flights from Santa Cruz to Sucre take 30 minutes. For those coming from Mairana, taxi/trufi service costs Bs. 7.

Get Around
Mototaxis are available for getting around town and reaching nearby attractions. A mototaxi to Amboro Park costs approximately Bs. 30. The town is walkable, with most sights clustered around the main square. For Condor Mountain, expect 4 hours of car driving plus 4-6 hours of hiking.

When To Go
The dry season from May to October offers the best conditions for hiking and outdoor activities. Avoid the rainy season from December to February, when self-guided hikes become dangerous and some trails are impassable. For condor watching, visit Condor Mountain on clear days when condors typically appear around midday.

Things To Do
The main attraction is El Fuerte de Samaipata, a UNESCO World Heritage site charging Bs. 50 entry. The small Museo Arqueologico de Samaipata on Calle Bolivar costs Bs. 5. Animal Refugio (2km from mercado municipal, Bs. 20) houses birds and monkeys. Easy self-guided options include Cuevas waterfalls. Amboro National Park offers cloud forest hikes for Bs. 210 per person in groups of 4 or Bs. 320 for pairs. Adventure seekers can tackle Condor Mountain (full day: 4hr driving + 4-6hr hiking) or combine with La Pajcha waterfall camping.

Go Next
Buses to Sucre cost Bs. 70-120 and take a full day on shaky roads (scenic route, overnight option available). From Mairana (Bs. 7 by taxi/trufi), a bus departs at 08:00 to Cochabamba for Bs. 40, arriving around 18:30 on a road that is approximately 70% unpaved. Tickets can be bought at the laundry shop on Calle Campero.
