Overview
The Cordillera de Sama Biological Reserve is a high-altitude sanctuary in Bolivia's Tarija department, roughly 90 km from the city of Tarija. The main attraction is the Tajzara lakes, where flamingos and over 30 other bird species gather year-round, with peak viewing between November and February.

Accommodation
Only one community-run option exists: Albergue de Pujzara on Patanka lake. Book ahead and request meals in advance.
Fees
SERNAP (Servicio Nacional de Áreas Protegidas) governs the reserve. Their office is opposite the Tarija bus station for permit inquiries.
Transport
Buses between Tarija and Tupiza/Villazón pass near the reserve. From Tarija, the journey takes about 2.5 hours. No public transport within the reserve—trek or arrange private transport.
Weather
Cold high-altitude climate. Winter temperatures can reach -20°C. Even summer nights are cold—bring a warm sleeping bag regardless of season.
