Why Go
Tupiza is a small frontier town in Bolivia's Potosí Department, strategically located near the Argentine border and serving as the primary departure point for travelers heading to the legendary Salar de Uyuni. The surrounding landscape is stunning—red-rock canyons, dramatic quebradas, and desert valleys that closely resemble the American Southwest, making it excellent for hiking, horseback riding, and jeep excursions. Unlike the more touristed Uyuni, Tupiza offers a quieter atmosphere where travelers can negotiate tour prices directly with competing agencies and experience genuine local culture in the Sunday market.

Getting In
Tupiza is accessible by train from Villazón (border with Argentina) to the south and Uyuni to the north, with departures every other day on the Ferrocarril Andino. By bus, minibuses and coaches connect to Tarija, Potosí, and Sucre. The town sits at approximately 2,950 m altitude, so travelers arriving from lower elevations should acclimatize before undertaking further journeys to the high altiplano.

Getting Around
Tupiza's compact town center is very walkable, with most shops, restaurants, and the central plaza within a 10-minute stroll. For reaching surrounding attractions like El Angosto and Entre Ríos, the town inexplicably features many tuk-tuks (rickshaws) that are considerably cheaper than taxis—expect to pay Bs. 30-50 for El Angosto. Minibuses to El Angosto or Entre Ríos cost only Bs. 5. Hiking trails and walking paths connect the various canyon attractions; using OpenStreetMap with apps like OsmAnd or Mapy.cz is recommended for GPS navigation.

When To Go
The best time to visit Tupiza is during the dry season from May to October, when clear skies make both hiking and Salar de Uyuni tours more rewarding. The wet season (November to March) brings occasional afternoon thunderstorms but offers greener landscapes and fewer tourists. On weekends, local fiestas may spontaneously occur—ask around at hostels to join in.

Where To Stay
Tupiza offers accommodation across all budgets. The best mid-range option is Hotel Mitru (Av Regimento Chicas 187) at Bs. 200 for a double, featuring a swimming pool, buffet breakfast, and WiFi, though rooms facing the street can be noisy from early morning garbage collection. Budget travelers favor Tupiza Hostal (Calle Florida No. 10) at just Bs. 25 per night with a usable kitchen and 24-hour security, or Valle Hermoso (Avenida Pedro Arraya nº 478) offering doubles for Bs. 100 with a 10% Hostelling International discount. Posada El Aborigen (Avenida Pedro Arraya 492) provides excellent value at Bs. 60 per person in a family-run, spotlessly clean hostel with hot showers and a large yard with hammocks.

Food And Drink
For budget meals, head to the upper level of the local market where set lunches start from Bs. 7 (negotiable), or try Cafe El Dobende (Calle Florida No. 29) for excellent coffee at Bs. 4-7 and salteño empanadas at 3 Bs. Il Bambino (Florida y Santa Cruz) serves popular Bs. 10 set lunches beloved by locals, while Escargo (Calle Avaroa y Serrano) offers a generous Bs. 20 four-course almuerzo. For Italian food, Ristorante Italiana is at Florida 272. After dark on weekends, Diver..Gente on Florida (one block off the square) offers nightlife with flashing lights and a DJ spinning DVDs, where a bottle of booze costs around Bs. 100.

Things To Do
The dramatic canyon landscape surrounding Tupiza is the main attraction. The full-day Canyon Trail covers El Cañon, Cañon del Inca, Puerta del Diablo, Valle de los Machos, and the Geoglificos in a circuit starting northwest of town and returning from the south—check OpenStreetMap for the exact route. Horseback riding tours through the American Southwest-like terrain cost Bs. 150 for 3 hours, with a syndicate rate of 30 Bs per hour; ask for leather leggings. Tuk-tuks (Bs. 30-50) can ferry visitors to El Angosto (also known as El Tunel) or Entre Ríos. Must-see viewpoints include Mirador Cristo and Cerro la Cruz.

Safety
Tupiza is generally safe for travelers, though standard precautions apply: guard valuables in crowded areas and use registered tuk-tuks or negotiated rides with clear price agreements before departing. When booking Salar de Uyuni tours, be aware that some agencies quote prices based on group size—a common upselling tactic. Always insist on the 6-person group rate as your reference price, then negotiate 20-30% below that. If a company won't meet your price, head to Uyuni where competition is fiercer.

Connectivity
Most newer accommodations offer free WiFi for guests, though speeds can be slow, especially at budget hostels like Valle Hermoso where internet runs through a single mobile SIM. Internet cafes are plentiful throughout town and reasonably priced but become very slow during peak usage times. For navigation, download offline maps from OpenStreetMap or use apps like OsmAnd and Mapy.cz before venturing into the surrounding areas.

Budget
Tupiza is extremely affordable for budget travelers. Daily costs break down approximately as: dorm bed Bs. 25-40, set lunch Bs. 7-20, local dinner Bs. 15-30, local transport (tuk-tuk) Bs. 5-50, and coffee/snacks Bs. 2-10. A reasonable daily budget is Bs. 80-150 excluding accommodation. Salar de Uyuni tours cost Bs. 600-800 per person when properly negotiated.

Day Trips
The surrounding quebradas, cañones, and valles offer excellent half-day and full-day excursions. El Angosto and Entre Ríos are easily reachable by tuk-tuk (Bs. 30-50) or minibus (Bs. 5). The complete Canyon Trail is a full-day commitment covering multiple dramatic canyon sites. For longer adventures, multi-day jeep tours depart for the Salar de Uyuni, though these are typically 3-4 day commitments rather than day trips.

Go Next
The most common onward journey is the iconic 3-4 day Salar de Uyuni tour, which ascends from Tupiza's 3,000 m to 4,200 m (occasionally 5,000 m) so proper acclimatization is essential. By train, departures go to Villazón (Argentina border), Uyuni, and Oruro every other day. By bus, connections run to Tarija, Potosí, and Sucre. For those finishing Bolivia, Villazón or Tarija serve as departure points toward Argentina or Paraguay.

Places to know
A few starting points from the guide. Check current hours and prices before you go.
- sleep
Hotel Mitru
Probably the best in town. Rooms vary from budget to luxury. There is a nice swimming pool. The staff is friendly and many of the rooms need renovation. But the included breakfast is fantastic - a large buffet spread of many things. There is WiFi in the rooms, but it can be slow at times. Ask for a room to the backside. The rooms to the main street can be quite noisy, especially the garbage truck in the morning.
Recorded price: Bs. 200 for double

La Torre Hotel
This is very nice hotel, staff is very friendly. They also offer 4-day tours but these should not be used as they simply take a commission and hand you off to any driver they can find

Posada El Aborigen
Family-run hostel and hotel just a couple blocks from the bus station. As of 2019 it was renovated and spotless. Goyo, the owner, has a great music collection and some antique radios. Wi-Fi and hot shower work great. Two double rooms, a triple room, and a room with a double bed (cama matrimonial) share a bathroom. The dining room doubles as Marcelina Restobar, offering typical Bolivian fare for breakfast and hamburgers, empanadas, and other food all day. There's a large yard out back with tables and hammocks.
Recorded price: Bs. 60 / person

Tupiza Hostal
Close to the bus station, train terminal, and the main square. Has a lovely courtyard with a fig tree, and a kitchen - though not very well equipped, this seemed to be one of the few hostels with a usable kitchen in town. Friendly staff (father and little son), and interesting gringo visitors. The door is watched 24/7 although at night the doorman is asleep, so ring persistently and/or call ahead if arriving on the 04:00 train. Rooms are clean, and blankets are provided.
Recorded price: Bs. 25 per night

Valle Hermoso
Two HI hostels (and a travel agency). Cheap, clean and well maintained doubles and dorms. 10% hi discount. Has WiFi but all run from a single mobile (SIM card) so very very slow, email took all night to load.
Recorded price: Bs. 100 for double (10% HI discount available)
