Why go?

Rétság is a small Hungarian town of about 2,700 residents in the Danube Bend region, situated 55 km north of Budapest between Vác and Balassagyarmat. The settlement dates back to the late 14th century when mentioned as Réthi Saagh, and retains reminders of its garrison past in the historic Caserne building. While Rétság itself has limited attractions, it serves as an excellent base for exploring surrounding villages with Slovak heritage, nearby castle ruins like Drégely Castle, and the Börzsöny mountain range.

Understand

The settlement was first documented as Réthi Saagh at the end of the 14th century. For a brief period it served as a garrison location, with the Caserne building still standing as evidence of this era. Under Ottoman occupation at the end of the 16th century, the population was nearly wiped out. The southern district of Pusztaszántó features a 19th-century classicist mansion that has been renovated and remains in good condition today.
