Overview
Calakmul is one of the most impressive Maya sites in the Yucatán, featuring the second highest pyramid in the Maya world after El Mirador in Guatemala. The biosphere reserve encompasses over 720,000 hectares of intact tropical forest—Mexico's largest—providing habitat for monkeys, deer, and diverse wildlife.

Before you go
Food
Bring all food and water into the park—nothing is available for purchase inside the reserve. Eat in Xpujil or Chicanna before or after your visit.
Money
Biosphere reserve entry costs M$180, archaeological site M$90 (Nov. 2023 prices). Taxi from Xpujil costs approximately M$1500 for a full day.
Safety
Region is very safe with minimal crime. Main risks are mosquitoes carrying malaria/dengue—bring strong repellent. Watch for topes (speed bumps) when driving.
Transport
Rent a car for easiest access; otherwise, take a bus from Xpujil (departs 05:30) to the park entrance, then hitchhike or arrange a taxi for the 60 km journey to the ruins.
