Overview

Rawa is a small rocky island 16 km off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, owned by the Johor Sultanate. With soft white sand beaches on its western shore, azure waters, and a living coral reef just 20-30 m offshore, it offers a pristine escape without development beyond two small resorts.

Before you go

Accommodation

Only two resorts exist; book months ahead for weekends and high season (April-October). Alang's Rawa offers basic fan-cooled rooms from RM 500/night; Rawa Island Resort has full-board options from RM 260/person.

Food

Both resorts have restaurants with expensive prices. Simple dishes at Le Club start at RM 13; buffet dinner at Rawa Safaris is RM 58++. No shops exist on the island—bring snacks if price-sensitive.

Money

Prices on Rawa are significantly higher than on the mainland. Bring sufficient cash in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) as ATMs may not be available on the island. Credit cards accepted at Rawa Island Resort and via PayPal at Alang's, but cash preferred at Alang's.

Packing

Bring snorkeling gear if you have it (limited free rental at Alang's). Sunscreen, hat, and water are essential. Cash, medications, and basic toiletries are necessary as options are limited on the island.

Safety

Avoid eastern coast in rough weather—no safe harbor. Jellyfish present; exercise caution while snorkeling. No medical facilities on island; bring medications and first-aid supplies.

Transport

Boats to Rawa depart from Mersing jetty; speedboat takes 30 minutes, ferry 1 hour. Book through resort office on Jalan Abu Bakar in Mersing. Peak season has multiple daily departures; off-season may have only 1-2.

Water

Resorts do not provide drinking water. Budget RM 14/person/day for water at RM 7 per 1.5 L bottle—several times mainland prices. Bring your own water from Mersing if possible.
