Why go?
Mersing is a small east-coast Malaysian town of approximately 21,000 people that serves as the primary gateway to Tioman Island. Unlike typical tourist destinations, Mersing retains a disappearing small-town culture with traditional and modern shop houses, local markets, and a slow-paced life largely untouched by mass development. The town has only two traffic lights and two roundabouts, and there are no chic clubs, shopping malls, or cafes. Its appeal lies in outdoor activities: jungle reserves, unspoiled beaches, rocky coasts, and offshore kelongs for pleasure angling.
Getting in
Mersing Harbour Centre, officially opened by the Sultan of Johor on September 10, 2017, serves as the central transport hub with bus and ferry counters, taxi bookings, and a tourism information desk. Buses connect Mersing to Johor Bahru (north) and Kuantan via Kota Tinggi (south). Ferries depart daily from the jetty for Tioman Island and other offshore islands.
Get around
Mersing town can be navigated easily by foot during the summer period, though a motor vehicle is advisable for exploring beaches outside town. The Mersing Harbour Centre complex is located near the jetty and includes a tourism information desk where taxis and trips to Endau can be booked.
When to go
Mersing can be visited year round, though December and January bring wet and windy weather. The best beach season runs from March to October. During the monsoon season (November to February/March), ferry services to islands may be reduced, and accommodation remains available but food choices on islands like Besar may be limited to instant noodles.
Where to stay
Numerous hotels and motels are available within Mersing town, ranging from budget options like Embassy Hotel (RM45 with free WiFi), Hotel Mersing (RM55 air-con room), and Zeeadam Backpackers (dormitory accommodation) to mid-range options like White Sand Beach Resort (RM170-200) and Seri Malaysia Mersing Hotel (RM168-208). Beach accommodations include Air Papan Chalets 12km north (RM90-300) and Sari Mawar Chalets & Campsite (RM60-80). Early reservation is recommended during Singapore and Malaysian holidays.
Food and drink
Mersing offers diverse dining options. For local cuisine, try Warung Ikan Bakar near the jetty for barbecued fish, or Mersing Seafood near Giant Supermarket for Chinese seafood. Loke Tien Yuen (opposite KFC) serves Chinese seafood with steamed daily catch. A vegetarian food stall operates in the Mersing Bus Station refreshment area from early morning until about 10AM. For Western food, Restoran P1 (halfway between roundabout and jetty) serves homemade pizza, pasta, sirloin steak, and schnitzel prepared by a Swiss chef at local prices, with a second-hand books exchange. Vietnamese cuisine is available at Viet Taste Restaurant next to the Hindu temple.
Things to do
Take a walk through town and sample traditional Malay "kueh" (confectioneries) during afternoon teatime. Mersing Town Forest Park (Taman Hutan Bandar Mersing) on Jalan Masjid offers green space. Sultan Iskandar Sea Park (Taman Laut Sultan Iskandar) on Jalan Abu Bakar provides marine experiences. Visit the Hindu temple at the base of the central hill near the roundabout and circumambulate the hill itself. Mersing Mosque on a hilltop offers excellent town views (15 minutes walk from center). The esplanade and marine park near Mersing Jetty provides riverside views with traditional Malaysian fishing boats visible from the bus terminal complex.
Buy
A large "Kini" Supermarket is located just 2 minutes walk from Mersing Bus Terminal. Budget travelers should purchase everything needed before visiting Tioman or other offshore islands, as mainland prices are significantly cheaper.
Safety
The beaches in the Penyabung area and at Air Papan are relatively isolated; visitors should exercise care and caution. Sandflies are present on islands like Besar Island, so bring insect repellent. Standard precautions for any Malaysian town apply.
Connectivity
An increasing number of shops, restaurants, and hotels offer free WiFi to customers. The standard charge for internet in Mersing is reportedly RM2 per hour.
Day trips
Air Papan beach is about 15 minutes drive north of Mersing, while Penyabung beach is approximately 30 minutes drive north. These beaches offer glimpses of traditional seaside Malay village life with relatively isolated stretches of sand. Mersing Town Forest Park provides a nature walk opportunity within the town itself.
Go next
Tioman Island is the primary destination for most visitors, accessible by ferry from Mersing Harbour Centre. Besar Island is closer to the mainland than Tioman, offering a quieter experience with swimming, snorkeling, beach, and jungle walks, but no nightlife. During monsoon season (November to February/March), food options on Besar may be limited to instant noodles. Sibu Island offers another island escape. Kukup is a small fishing village with houses on stilts. Road connections head north to Johor Bahru via Kota Tinggi and south to Kuantan via Pekan.
