Why go?

Kluang is a quieter, more authentic alternative to Johor Bahru for travelers heading east toward Mersing or Endau Rompin. The town is famous for its traditional kopi (coffee) culture, vintage railway station operating since 1915, and excellent street food including beef noodles, bak kut teh, and local cakes. Traditional crafts like shoemaking and textile shops still thrive along Jalan Ismail, offering a glimpse of old Malaysian town life.

Getting in

Kluang is 110 km north of Johor Bahru via the trunk road. The town sits on the main railway line between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, with KTMB train services stopping at Kluang Railway Station. Express buses from Larkin Sentral in Johor Bahru take about 2 hours. From Kuala Lumpur, it's roughly 3-4 hours by bus or train.

Getting around

Kluang is compact enough to explore on foot in the downtown area. The Muafakat bus route KL001 departs hourly from Kluang Bus and Taxi Terminal between 6AM-8PM, stopping at Kluang Mall, Taman Sri Kluang, Taman Intan, and major hotels. The railway line cuts through town and temporarily closes the main road when trains pass. Taxis are available at the bus terminal.

When to go

Kluang can be visited year-round as it's inland and receives less rainfall than the coast. The dry season from March to September is most comfortable for outdoor activities like climbing Mount Lambak. Weekends tend to be busier with locals visiting from Johor Bahru, especially at popular food spots like Yean Kee Beef Noodles.

Where to stay

Downtown Kluang near Jalan Dato' Rauf has the widest range of hotels, from budget options like RS Boutique Hotel (opened 2015) to mid-range like Hotel Anika with 44 rooms. The Tasik Business Centre area near Kluang Lake offers cheaper options like Rail Hotel and Starz Hotel with rooms from around RM80-150. Prime City Hotel near the bus terminal has 147 rooms with covered parking.

Food and drink

Kluang is a food destination: Kluang Railway Coffee Shop has served kaya toast and half-boiled eggs since the 1930s, open 6:30AM-12:30PM and 2:30-6PM (closed Thursdays). Yean Kee Beef Noodles at Jalan Murni 3 has hand-made rice noodles since 1930, served dry or in soup with peanuts and lime. Kluang Food Street at Sunway Kluang Mall offers diverse options. Other notable spots: Milky Cake House for local cakes, Restoran Ikan Asam Pedas for asam fish head, and Barney's for Western food with Wagyu Prime Rib.

Walk along Jalan Ismail to see traditional Chinese cobblers still hand-making shoes. Climb Mount Lambak Recreational Forest, Kluang's highest peak at 510m, which takes under 2 hours for a moderately fit person. Day trip to Kahang Organic Rice Farm (40 minutes) for peaceful padi field views.

Mersing, the gateway to Tioman Island, is 1.5-2 hours east. Gunung Berlumut is a hiking destination nearby. The Kluang Modern Agriculture Project covers 9,000 acres with farms including UK Agro Farm, good for a half-day dirt road driving experience.
