Overview
Piatra Craiului National Park, founded in 1938, is one of Romania's most spectacular national parks. The park protects 4879 ha of core area plus a 9894 ha buffer zone, centered on the dramatic limestone ridge of the Piatra Craiului mountains.

Accommodation
Hotels, pensions (Cazare), and campgrounds in surrounding villages. Mountain huts provide basic shelter. Weekend nights can be noisy with Romanian parties. Wild camping common on ridge.
Activities
Well-marked color-coded trails throughout. Steel cables and chains assist on steep sections. Rock climbing available in Zarnesti Gorges. Brown bear watching from enclosed observatory (March-November).
Packing
Bring sleeping bag and mattress for mountain huts—shelters only have steel plates. Carry sufficient water; no springs available on ridge. Pack sturdy hiking boots and rain gear.
Safety
Brown bears present throughout the park. Avoid spring camping at lower elevations. Carpathian Shepherd Dogs guard sheep flocks—call for shepherd before approaching. Thunderstorms common on ridge.
Transport
Main access via Zarnesti from Brasov. Public buses from Brasov to Campulung or Pitesti stop at Podul Dambovitei. Local transport into valleys requires minibuses or private vehicles.
