Why go?

Râșnov is a small Saxon town founded in the 13th century in the Burzenland region of Transylvania. Its main draw is the freshly restored 14th-century fortress perched on a hill with panoramic views, one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Romania. The town blends forested mountain scenery, old Saxon houses, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it a cheaper, quieter alternative to Brașov for travelers who want easy access to attractions like Bran Castle (30 km), the Piatra Craiului mountains, and the Poiana Brașov ski resort. A new Dino Park and growing number of pensions cater to visitors seeking nature, history, and outdoor activities without capital-city chaos.

Get in

The easiest approach is via Brașov — direct buses run roughly every 30 minutes from Brașov's main bus station (Autogara 2) to Râșnov, taking about 30 minutes and costing approximately 4.5 lei. Minibuses (maxi-taxis) also serve the route. By car from Brașov, take DN73 east for about 15 km. There is no train station in Râșnov itself; the nearest rail access is in Brașov.

Get around

Râșnov is compact and best explored on foot — the fortress, main square, and most restaurants are within a 10-minute walk of each other. Taxis are available: Tur Taxi (phone +40 268 231 100 or +40 728 231 100). Local buses connecting to Brașov also stop at various points within town for those venturing to nearby attractions.

When to go

Summer (June–August) brings warm weather ideal for hiking the Cheile Râșnoavei canyon and forest trails, plus peak season for Dino Park and outdoor activities. Winter (December–February) turns the surrounding mountains into a ski destination via nearby Poiana Brașov. Spring and autumn offer cooler temperatures and fewer crowds for visiting the fortress and nearby villages. No specific festivals are noted in the article.

Where to stay

Râșnov has many small pensions charging roughly €10–30 per night for a room. Budget travelers can find basic doubles from 60–80 lei/night (e.g., Floare de Colt at 60 lei, Casa Leah at 80 lei with parking and BBQ). Mid-range options include Rock & Red (150 lei/night with internet and small fitness) and Max International (120 lei/night with minispa). The cheapest restaurant is Izvor, where a soup costs 5 lei and a beer 3 lei. Couchsurfing is possible using parameters Romania, Brașov, Râșnov. Two campgrounds exist: one on the road toward Poiana Brașov and another in the Glejerie area. Many backpackers choose to stay in Brașov for its larger selection of hostels and nightlife, then day-trip to Râșnov — the 30-minute bus ride costs about 4.5 lei.

Food and drink

Budget eats start at the Izvor restaurant in the center opposite the hospital, where soup costs 5 lei and beer 3 lei. The Rosenau restaurant near the market offers beer for 4.5–9 lei. La Strada bar is a 2-minute walk from the center; Puscalupi at Strada Libertății 2 has an authentic Transylvanian feel. For self-catering, Penny Market, Billa, and Minimax supermarkets stock fresh produce, local cheese, and meat. The renowned butcher Arzoiu at the intersection of Caraiman and Armata Romana streets is recommended for barbecue supplies. Mid-range dining includes Radsor (hotel restaurant on a parallel street near Castle Pub) and Sub Cetate Sergiana at Strada Cetății 34, serving sausages and meat pies in a lodge-style setting. Beer rarely exceeds 9 lei at any establishment.

Things to do

The Râșnov Citadel (Cetatea Râșnov) is the top attraction — a 14th-century Saxon fortress open 09:00–19:00, charging 12 lei for adults and 6 lei for minors, students, and retirees. The fortress sits on a hill offering breathtaking views and houses a bar; visitors can also try archery. The 13th-century Evanghelical Church in the city center features murals dating to around 1500. Dino Park, the largest dinosaur theme park in Eastern Europe, showcases over 100 dinosaur replicas and prehistoric animals with a walk lasting about one hour, plus cinemas, a playground, a small volcano simulation, a zip line, a museum, and a gift shop. Outdoor options include mountain biking in the surrounding forests (best at Cheile Râșnoavei canyon) with bike rental available, fishing, golf, and helicopter rides over the mountains.

Safety

Râșnov is generally safe for travelers. The main concern noted is limited medical access: the hospital is in the center, but ambulance service operates only 12 hours per day, which travelers should factor in for emergencies during night hours.

Connectivity

Two internet cafes operate in the center. The post office is on Mihai Viteazu street. Specific SIM card providers and pricing are not mentioned in the article.

Budget

A backpacker can manage on 150–250 lei/day including mid-range accommodation (60–150 lei/night), meals at cheap local spots (soup 5 lei, meals 15–30 lei), local bus to Brașov (4.5 lei), and fortress entry (12 lei). Beer costs 3–9 lei. Couchsurfing or camping can reduce accommodation to near zero, bringing daily costs below 100 lei.

Day trips

Râșnov is ideally positioned for day trips: Bran Castle (30 km, home of the Dracula legend), Brașov (15 km, medieval old town and Black Church), Sinaia (mountain resort and Peles Castle), Zărnești (gateway to Piatra Craiului National Park), Prejmer (fortified church), and Poiana Brașov (ski resort). All are reachable by bus or taxi from Râșnov.

Go next

From Râșnov, buses and maxitaxis connect regularly to Brașov (30 min, 4.5 lei). From Brașov, onward connections include trains to Bucharest (3–4 hours), Sighișoara, and the rest of Romania. Poiana Brașov ski resort is 20 km away and reachable by taxi or occasional bus. The DN73 road heads toward Câmpulung and the southern Carpathians.
