Why Go
Pharping is one of the most sacred sites in the Kathmandu Valley for followers of Vajrayana Buddhism, where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is said to have attained full realization in the 8th century. The town features two sacred caves—Asura Cave and Yanglesho Cave—along with numerous Tibetan Buddhist monasteries and retreat centers in the Nyingma tradition. It offers a contemplative alternative to Kathmandu's busy streets, perfect for pilgrims, spiritual seekers, and those interested in Himalayan Buddhist culture.

Understand
Pharping (sometimes spelled 'Parping' and also known as Yanglesho) is a small town about an hour from Kathmandu. According to Buddhist texts, when Guru Rinpoche began the practice of Yangdak Heruka with consort Shakyadevi at Pharping, powerful spirits caused a three-year drought with famine and disease. It is said that the moment messengers reached Pharping with tantric texts from India, the obstacles were pacified and the famine subsided. The area contains two sacred caves on the mountainside and multiple Nyingma monasteries and retreat centers.

Get Around
The town bazaar is small and can be covered on foot, though some outlying monasteries like Neydo Tashi Choeling may require a vehicle. Taxis are available in the town for reaching distant sites. The walk to Asura Cave is short (ten minutes) but steep with many stairs to climb.

When To Go
Pharping can be visited year-round, but the best time is during the autumn months (October-November) when weather is clear and pleasant. The monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rains that can make cave paths slippery. Winter months are cooler but manageable for visits.

Things To Do
The main activities center on Buddhist pilgrimage: chanting mantras like the 'Seven Line Prayer' and Guru Rinpoche mantra ("Om Ah Hung Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum"), lighting butter lamps, offering incense, and hoisting prayer flags. The Asura Cave is where Guru Rinpoche attained the siddhi of Mahamudra after combining Yangdak Heruka and Vajrakilaya practices. Yanglesho Cave, a five-minute walk from the village, is where Guru Rinpoche first undertook the sadana of Heruka before culminating at Asura Cave; the two caves are connected by a narrow channel.
