Why Go

Nagarkot is a rustic resort village perched on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu Valley, 32km northeast of the capital. It is famous for its panoramic Himalayan views, with the sunrise over peaks including Everest (8,848m), Manaslu, and Shisha Pangma (8,012m) being particularly magnificent. The town has a laid-back atmosphere with no touts, making it ideal for long-term backpackers to decompress and plan their next leg. The main road is unpaved and dusty during the day, and weekends draw more local visitors from Kathmandu.

See

The main attraction is the Himalayan panorama visible from Nagarkot's ridge. On clear days, viewers can see major peaks including Manaslu, Ganesh, Langtang, Dorje Lakpa (6,975m), Shisha Pangma (8,012m), Choyu, Gauri Shankar (7,146m), and even the tip of Mt. Everest (8,848m). The best times for viewing are at sunrise and sunset. Be aware that views may be obscured by cloud, even in autumn when the air is usually clear. Do

The Panoramic Hiking Trail is a 12km loop taking 3-4 hours through thickly forested pine hills, passing Rohini Bhanjyang, terraced hillsides, and rustic farmhouses. The trail is not well-marked on the ground but can be navigated offline using smartphone GIS following instructions at nagarkothotels.blogspot.com. The 2015 earthquake destroyed the formerly listed Paneer Cheese Factory. The Lookout Tower offers high views 4km from the village.

Buy

The main draw for visitors is the Himalayan views rather than shopping. There are two ATMs in Nagarkot: Prabhu Bank and Machhapuchchhre Bank, supposedly open during daytime hours. Overseas cards reportedly work for withdrawals. Other than places to stay and a few eateries, there is little else available for purchase in the village.

Hotels and guesthouses abound both in Nagarkot and in the surrounding hills and valleys. Since the charm lies in the natural environment and mountain views, central location need not be a priority.
