Why Go?
Dhulikhel is a real Newari town with a village square lined with temples, offering Himalayan views as good as those from Nagarkot but with far more authentic character. At 1550m elevation with about 10,000 residents, it provides a quieter alternative to more tourist-heavy hill stations. The town sits at the intersection of the Arniko Highway to Tibet (74 km) and the B.P. Highway to the Eastern Terai, making it a practical stop for overlanders and trekkers alike.

Getting In
Buses from Kathmandu's Ratna Park bus station take about two hours and cost less than Rs100, passing through Bhaktapur on the way. Taxis from Bhaktapur will likely cost more than Rs1000, with prices from Kathmandu at least double that amount. Dhulikhel is also accessible via the Kathmandu Valley Cultural Trekking Trail, which starts in Sundarijal and passes through Chisapani (2,150m, 5½ hr) and Nagarkot (2,163m, 5-7½ hr) before reaching Dhulikhel (4-7 hr from Nagarkot).

Getting Around
Dhulikhel is a small place easily explored on foot. The Kali Temple is reached via a dirt road up the hill, while the Shiva Temple lies over 2 km southeast of the village square at the bottom of a gorge. Most guesthouses and restaurants are clustered around the main square and along the B.P. Highway and Arniko Highway junction where the ATM is located.

When to Go
The best time to visit Dhulikhel is during the clear sky seasons of October-November and March-April when Himalayan views are most reliable. Winter nights can be cold at 1550m elevation, while monsoon season (June-August) brings heavy rainfall that can obscure mountain views and make hiking trails muddy. Weekends see more local visitors at the Kali Temple viewpoint.

Most visitors eat at their hotel or lodge as independent restaurants are few. Newa Kitchen near the bus stop offers both international and Nepali dishes from Rs80-300. Rukh Cafe on the B.P. Highway (next to Nabil Bank ATM) serves from 07:00-22:00 with items including espresso, cappuccino, pizza, sandwiches, Japanese gyoza, and special masala tea at Rs100-200. Things to Do
The Kali Temple at the top of the hill provides an excellent viewpoint and is popular with locals on weekends. Narayan Temple is a Hindu temple to Vishnu near the town centre, while the Shiva Temple lies over 2 km southeast at the bottom of a gorge. The main activity is hiking to Namo Buddha, one of Nepal's most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites where the Buddha offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs. The 6-hour round-trip hike is well-signed and starts in the same direction as the Kali Temple walk. At Namo Buddha, visit the Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery with nearly 250 monks training in ritual practices and Dharma.

Connectivity
There is a Nabil Bank ATM in the centre of town at the junction of B.P. Highway and Arniko Highway. There is no place to change currencies in Dhulikhel, so visitors should obtain Nepalese Rupees before arrival or in Kathmandu. WiFi is typically available at hotels and lodges rather than in public spaces.

Safety
Dhulikhel is a generally safe small town with low crime rates. Standard precautions against petty theft apply. The main hiking routes are well-marked, but always carry water and start early in the morning for day hikes. During monsoon, trails can become slippery. Emergency services can be reached by dialing 100 for police, 102 for ambulance, or 103 for fire.

Day Trips
Namo Buddha is the most popular day trip from Dhulikhel, taking approximately 3 hours each way via a well-signed hiking route. The village of Panauti is 2½-3 hours from Namo Buddha, featuring several temples and considered particularly sacred at the junction of two rivers plus an invisible third river called Padmabati. Banepa, a short drive away, offers additional exploration opportunities.
