Overview
Pénjamo is a historic colonial city of 40,000 people in Guanajuato state, famous as the birthplace of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of the Mexican Nation. The city offers colonial architecture, the Zona Arqueológica de Plazuelas archaeological site, and proximity to Hacienda Corralejo, one of the few major tequila distilleries outside Jalisco.

History
Pénjamo is the birthplace of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of Mexican Independence, born in 1753 at what is now Hacienda Corralejo.
Transport
Pénjamo is accessed via Federal Highway 90; the nearest major bus terminals are in Irapuato and Celaya. A car is helpful for visiting Hacienda Corralejo and the Sierra de Pénjamo.
