Overview

Pacanda is a tiny Purhepecha indigenous island in Lake Patzcuaro with about 400 residents. It is known for its strong Day of the Dead (Noche de los Muertos) traditions, when the cemetery fills with families setting up ofrendas for departed souls.

Accommodation

There are no hotels on the island. Stay in Patzcuaro or Janitzio and visit Pacanda as a day trip.

Food

No restaurants exist on Pacanda. Bring food or expect only occasional food stands near the church and drinks near the dock.

Shopping

There are no stores on the island. Bring any needed supplies from Patzcuaro.

Transport

Boats to Pacanda depart from Patzcuaro's San Pedrito Pier (45 min, stops at other islands) or Ucasanástakua pier (15 min direct). No cars exist on the island.
