Okinawa is Japan's subtropical answer to Hawaii, a chain of 49 inhabited and 111 uninhabited islands between mainland Japan and Taiwan. Formerly the independent Ryukyu Kingdom with its own language and culture, it's now one of Japan's 47 prefectures offering gorgeous scenery, world-class diving, pristine beaches, tragic wartime history, and strong cultural identity amid a significant U.S.

Culture
Okinawan culture is distinct from mainland Japan with its own dialect (Okinawa-ben) and some elderly speakers of Ryukyuan languages. Respect for local customs is appreciated.
Health
Sunburn is the number one risk—apply sunscreen liberally. Venomous habu snakes exist but rarely encountered. Jellyfish and marine creatures present beach risks.
Money
Japan is largely cash-based; carry yen for smaller establishments and markets. Credit cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.
Transport
Naha Airport is the main hub with flights to Tokyo, Osaka, and international destinations. Ferries connect outer islands but schedules can be infrequent.
Weather
Subtropical climate with mild winters (15-20°C) and hot humid summers. Typhoon season runs September-October. May-June rainy season rarely dumps rain all day.
