Overview
Noboribetsu is Hokkaido's premier hot spring destination, drawing Japanese tourists to its 11 distinct mineral-rich spring waters containing sulfur and iron. The main draw is Noboribetsu Onsen, a resort village 6 km inland from the city proper, where visitors can bathe in diverse therapeutic waters ranging from simple hot springs to acidic chloride springs.

Before you go
Money
Japan is predominantly cash-based, especially in smaller onsen towns. Noboribetsu Onsen village has limited ATM access—withdraw before arriving from Sapporo or Chitose.
Packing
Bring sensible walking shoes with good grip. If staying overnight, light yukata-style robes are provided by ryokan for wandering between baths.
Safety
Paths around Hell Valley can be slippery and snow-covered. Some trails become impassable in spring. Follow posted warnings around volcanic areas.
Transport
Highway buses from Sapporo (¥2,280-2,500, ~2 hours) are the most convenient option. The JR station is useful but offers fewer departure options.
