Getting In

Nakuru is situated along the A104 highway connecting Nairobi to western Kenya. Matatus (shared minibuses) provide frequent transport to and from Nairobi, with the journey taking approximately 3-4 hours. The city also has a railway station, though service frequency should be confirmed locally.

Get Around

Matatus operate from central stages throughout the city and to surrounding areas. Within the city center, bodaboda (motorcycle taxis) and tuktuks are common for short distances. Walking is feasible in the central business district, though traffic can be busy near markets and bus stages.

When To Go

Nakuru sits at high elevation providing relatively mild weather with warm days and cool evenings. The main wet seasons occur March-May and October-December, when roads can become muddy. Early mornings and lake drives can be chilly, so bring a warm layer. The dry seasons offer better wildlife viewing conditions.

Budget hotels are plentiful in Nakuru, with many located within 5 minutes walking distance from the Matatu station. Accommodation options range from basic guesthouses to mid-range hotels. Care Guest House offers single/double rooms with hot water bathrooms from Ksh 800-1200. Premier Lodge provides rooms with mosquito nets, hot showers, and WiFi from Ksh 600-1000, with a generator for power outages.

Food And Drink

Local bars serve Tusker beer and soft drinks. Rift Fries Restaurant on Inder Singh Road offers great value food from 8am-8pm. Taidys on Mburu Gichua Road provides a mix of African and Western cuisine with pizzas at Ksh 300. Merica Hotel at the west end of Kenyatta Avenue serves Western food in an upmarket setting with meals around Ksh 500 and pool access for Ksh 300.

Things To Do

Lake Nakuru National Park is the major attraction, home to famous pink flamingos and diverse wildlife including rhinos, buffalo, lions, and baboons. Menengai Crater is a dormant volcano that still emits smoke, offering dramatic views from its edge. Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site and Museum showcases Neolithic and Iron Age findings. Rugby matches at Nakuru Athletics Club take place on Saturdays at 2PM and 4PM.

Safety

Nakuru is generally one of Kenya's safer mid-sized cities, but normal urban precautions apply. Pickpocketing can occur at matatu stages and open-air markets. Avoid walking alone after dark on quiet side streets. Keep valuables out of sight in matatus. Political gatherings can become tense. Within Lake Nakuru National Park, do not exit vehicles except at marked viewpoints, maintain distance from wildlife, and keep car windows closed around baboons.
