Why go?
Naivasha sits on the shores of Kenya's largest freshwater lake at 1,890 m elevation—the highest lake in the Rift Valley. Nairobi residents flock here for weekend boat rides to spot hippos and waterbirds, while backpackers use it as a base for Hell's Gate National Park's unique walking-safari and cycling experiences. The area offers a mix of budget camping grounds along the lake shore and surprisingly affordable lodges, making it one of the most accessible Rift Valley escapes from Nairobi.

Get in
Matatus from Nairobi take 1½ hours and cost Ksh 300. From Nyahururu (2 hours) or Narok (2.5 hours, 126 km) expect Ksh 400. Matatus to Nakuru cost Ksh 300 and run hourly. The new SGR high-speed railway from Mombasa and Nairobi stops at Suswa railway station, 35 km southwest—not in Naivasha itself. The old metre-gauge line has a station in central Naivasha, with limited passenger service and one weekly train to Kisumu every Friday for Ksh 600 (2021). Naivasha ICD railway station connects some metre-gauge trains with the SGR.

Get around
Matatus run along Moi South Lake Road to Kongoni (one hour, Ksh 100), stopping at Hell's Gate National Park entrance on the way. For reaching lodges further along the lake shore, hitching or negotiating a motorbike taxi (boda-boda) are common budget options. Hiring a bicycle at Fisherman's Camp or nearby provides independent access to Hell's Gate's 25 km of tarred and gravel roads.

When to go
Naivasha is a year-round destination, though the dry seasons (June-August and December-February) offer easier wildlife viewing as vegetation is less dense. Morning boat rides between 7-9 AM are optimal for spotting hippos basking on the lake shore; later in the day they submerge and only snouts are visible. Weekends see increased domestic tourism from Nairobi, so weekday visits are quieter.

Where to stay
Lake Naivasha's southern shore is dotted with accommodation from budget camping to upscale lodges. Fisherman's Camp offers camping at Ksh 700 per person, tent rental at Ksh 950, and family cabins at Ksh 5,000. Fish Eagle Inn has camping at Ksh 600 and dorm beds at Ksh 1,000, with executive suites for those wanting more comfort. Hotel Kafiko on Biashara Road provides clean singles/doubles at Ksh 1,500/2,200 with free breakfast and WiFi. The YMCA on Moi South Lake Road (15 km from the junction) offers camping at Ksh 400 and dorm beds at Ksh 700.

Food and drink
Most lakeside lodges and camps have restaurants and bars on site, with restaurant meals typically including fresh tilapia and mudfish from the lake. For cheaper eats, venture into the local villages where small restaurants and cafes serve hearty Kenyan staples at very low prices. Local village bars offer cheaper beer than lodge bars, which sometimes have TVs for sports viewing.

Things to do
A boat ride on Lake Naivasha is essential—early morning (7-9 AM) gives the best hippo sightings as they sunbathe on shore. Boat trips can be combined with a transfer to Crescent Island for walking safaris among giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes. Hell's Gate National Park allows hiking and cycling (bicycle rental available) among zebra, gazelle, and warthogs; the Ol Njorowa Gorge is closed due to past flash flood casualties. Mvuke Spa at the park's northwest corner offers a geothermal hot spring soak until 6 PM. Dine on fresh tilapia and mudfish from the lake at any of the lodge restaurants.

Go next
From Naivasha Town, matatus run north to Nakuru (Ksh 300, one hour). Hell's Gate National Park is accessible by matatu along Moi South Lake Road. Mount Longonot National Park, a stratovolcano with a dramatic crater rim hike, is another popular day trip. The SGR railway at Suswa (35 km southwest) provides onward connections to Mombasa and Nairobi, useful for reaching other national parks.

Budget planning
Naivasha is a budget-friendly destination in Kenyan Shillings. Accommodation ranges from Ksh 400 camping at YMCA to Ksh 2,200 for a private room at Hotel Kafiko. Local village restaurants serve very cheap meals. Matatus cost Ksh 100-400 depending on destination. Lake Naivasha boat rides and Hell's Gate National Park entry fees are the main activity costs.
