Why Go
Nakhon Si Thammarat is one of Thailand's most ancient cities, serving as the administrative centre of southern Thailand for most of its history. The city was a major trading post where British, Portuguese, and Dutch merchants set up operations in the 17th century. Today it offers a compelling alternative to tourist-heavy destinations, with the iconic 78-metre chedi of Wat Phra Mahathat as its centrepiece, surrounded by 173 smaller pagodas. The old town's historic city wall, one square kilometre in area with gates connecting to the former coastline, provides tangible connections to a fascinating past.

Getting In
Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport (NST) receives flights from Bangkok Don Mueang via Nok Air, Thai Lion Air, and Thai AirAsia. The city sits approximately 780 km south of Bangkok on the east coast of the Malay Peninsula. Train service connects Nakhon Si Thammarat to Bangkok and other southern destinations on the Southern Line. The city was originally a coastal city until silting moved the coastline away, so today's modern centre around the train station lies north of Old Town.
