Overview
Mount Athos (Agio Oros, Holy Mountain) is a 390-km² peninsula in northern Greece containing 20 Eastern Orthodox monasteries housing approximately 2,000 monks. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a self-governed monastic state dedicated to the Holy Mother of God, where visitors come for meditation, prayer, and study.

Monastery guesthouses (archontariki) offer spartan dormitory accommodation. Check in before 16:00. Donations accepted for longer stays.
Connectivity
Phone reception unavailable in remote interior areas. Limited connectivity at monasteries.
Etiquette
Dress conservatively: long trousers, long sleeves recommended. Photography of monks/churches prohibited. No video filming.
Food
Meals included with monastery stay; vegetarian-focused with occasional fish. Stock up on supplies at Ouranoupoli before entering.
Safety
Low crime due to strict access controls. Hiking requires caution on steep paths. Bring GPS and adequate supplies.
Transport
Access only by ferry from Ouranoupoli (west) or Ierissos (east). Taxi-minibuses and walking connect monasteries within the peninsula.
