Overview

Motul is a small coastal town of just over 20,000 people in northern Yucatán, famous as the origin of huevos motuleños, a beloved regional breakfast now popular throughout the peninsula. It holds the distinction of being one of Mexico's designated Pueblos Mágicos, a program recognizing towns with cultural or historical significance.

As a Pueblo Mágico, Motul takes pride in its cultural heritage. Locals are generally friendly and welcoming to visitors. Learning basic Spanish phrases enhances the experience. The town observes Mexican national holidays.

Food

Huevos motuleños is the must-try dish. Best experienced at Doña Evelia in the Mercado Municipal 20 de Noviembre, open mornings until early afternoon, cash only. Regional stews (guisadas) are another local specialty available at Cocina Alexi.

Money

Mexican Pesos (MXN/M$) are used throughout. The market and many local restaurants are cash-only. ATMs may be limited; withdraw sufficient cash in Mérida before visiting if possible. Credit cards are rarely accepted at small establishments.

Safety

Motul is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply in market areas. Swimming at Cenote Sambula has timed entry; follow lifeguard instructions and be aware of seasonal depth variations.

Transport

Buses to Mérida (23 daily), Cancún (4 daily), and Playa del Carmen (1 daily) depart from Plaza Oasis/Autobuses del Centro. Local travel is best done on foot within town. Renting a car would provide flexibility for exploring surrounding cenotes and towns.
