Before you go

Food

Street food is available but be selective. Eat only peeled fruits and bread from vendors with clean setups. Restaurant prices include gringo tax.

Money

Prices for tourists are often double the local rate (gringo tax). Bargaining is expected and necessary. Carry small bills for street purchases.

Safety

Montecristi is generally safe for tourists. Avoid the annual pilgrimage week if you prefer fewer crowds. Exercise standard urban precautions.

Shopping

Shops near the church are cheaper than those on the main road. Buy Panama hats here as a souvenir. Bargain by offering to buy multiple items.

Transport

Buses (orange coop) connect to Manta for $0.35. Taxis cost $10-15 from Manta. Walking is feasible in the compact town center.
