Why Go?
Puerto López is a former fishing village on Ecuador's Pacific coast that has developed into a tourism hotspot while retaining its authentic character. The town is best known as the departure point for Isla de la Plata, nicknamed the "Poor Man's Galapagos" for its blue-footed boobies, frigate birds, and whale watching opportunities from June to September. The beach promenade, pier for island tours, and proximity to Machalilla National Park make it an ideal base for nature-focused travelers seeking more affordable alternatives to the Galápagos.

Getting In
Puerto López has a new bus terminal about a mile north of town on the coastal highway. Tuc-tucs (mototaxis) charge $1 to take you to town. From Montañita, frequent buses cost $2.50 (1 hr); note that some buses lack under-seat storage, so be prepared to hold your pack on your lap. To Guayaquil, buses depart at 07:00, 09:00, 13:00, and 16:00 ($4, 4 hr via Jipijapa). From Portoviejo, two companies serve Puerto Lopez with stops at Jipijapa and Montañita ($3, 2 hr). From Quito, Reina del Camino and Carlos Aray provide direct service from the Quitumbe Terminal ($13).

Getting Around
Everything except the bus terminal is within walking distance in Puerto López. Taximotos (mototaxis) should not cost more than $1 to get around town. The beach promenade (Malecón), restaurants, and most accommodations are clustered near the waterfront.

When to Go
The humpback whale season runs from June to September, making these months ideal for combining Isla de la Plata tours with whale watching. Water visibility for snorkeling is best during the dry season (June to December). The daily fishing catch arrives each morning near the pier—the timing varies by season, and watching the ensuing rush of sharks, swordfish, wahoo, frigate birds, and pelicans is a highlight year-round.

Where to Stay
Accommodation ranges from budget dorms to mid-range hotels along the Malecón. Hostal Machalilla offers rooms from $12 per person with kitchen access, while Sol Inn provides dorm beds at $8 and private rooms from $20. For more comfort, Hosteria Mandála (from $40 single) features eco-friendly bamboo cabins with gardens, and Hotel Nantu (s/d $30/$40) includes a swimming pool and Jacuzzi. Food and Drink
Budget travelers can eat well from food carts a few blocks east of the shore—empanadas cost 50¢. The shoreline is lined with seafood restaurants ranging from $3.50-10. Three Italian restaurants serve pasta and pizza, including Pizza on the Corner Montalvo/Cordova ($1/slice). Restaurant Russo near the Malecón serves Russian and European cuisine ($2.50-8) and stays open until midnight. Local beer Pilsener costs $1.50 for 600ml; fruity drinks range from $3-5. You can also buy ceviche and sandwiches from the cabañas on the shore.

Things to Do
The signature activity is the Isla de la Plata tour ($30-45, including 1½-hour boat ride and lunch), where you can see blue and red-footed boobies, frigate birds, colorful fish, sea turtles, and sea lions, plus combined snorkeling and whale watching (June-September). Isla de Salango tours cost $10-15 with 30-minute boat rides. Within Machalilla National Park, the free Frailes section offers hiking paths through viewpoints to a swimmable beach, while Agua Blanca ($5) includes an archaeological museum, guided land visit, and sulfur spring bath. Horseback riding tours in the nature park run $40 for a full day.

See
Each morning, the fishing catch arrives at the beach near the pier. A mad rush ensues as buyers compete for the best catches—sharks, swordfish, wahoo (from the tuna family), frigate birds, and pelicans all compete for their share. This spectacle is free and provides excellent wildlife viewing.

Go Next
Puerto López is the closest village to Parque Nacional Machalilla. The park headquarters is one block behind the plaza and includes a small museum (free entry). Playa Los Frailes is 10km north inside the park—take a northbound bus for 50¢ one way and walk 3km to the entrance, or hire a mototaxi for $1 per person from the entrance or $6 round-trip from town (free entry). Agua Blanca is a small village and archaeological site of the Manteño people, named after a pre-Incan sulfur-water pool. The Salango Museum features pre-Columbian pottery and shell spondylus reflecting Ecuador's prehistoric cultures.
