Overview

Mitrovica is a unique destination where you can experience the tangible legacy of Kosovo's ethnic divisions firsthand. The city is divided along the Ibër River between an Albanian south and Serbian north, with the Mitrovica Bridge serving as a powerful symbol of this separation.

Internet cafes are common. European Type C/F power plugs with 230V. Mobile coverage available from local operators on both sides.

Culture

The city is divided between Albanian (south) and Serbian (north) populations. Both communities have distinct religious sites, shops, and customs. Respectful behavior at religious sites is expected.

Money

Kosovo uses the Euro (€) as its currency. Serbian dinars are used in the north. Credit cards accepted at larger establishments but cash preferred at markets and smaller shops.

Safety

The bridge is safe by day but exercise caution at night. City has stabilized since 2023 with increased freedom of movement between sides. Some areas near the gypsy quarter show wartime destruction.

Transport

Combi minibuses operate in the south; walking is fine in the north. Taxis are cheap throughout. Buses to Pristina run 3 times hourly from the south bus station. Train service from Serbia arrives in north Mitrovica twice daily.
