Did you know?

  1. Organic coffee production is a local specialty.

  3. Pozo Azul has two small waterfalls.

Why go?

Minca is a small mountain town 20 km from Santa Marta, sitting at 580 m elevation with a cooler climate than the coast. Famous for organic coffee production, it attracts backpackers seeking tranquility and outdoor activities. The area offers over 300 bird species, spectacular mountain views, and serves as a base for hiking, mountain biking, and visiting waterfalls. Unlike the bustling coast, Minca provides a relaxed atmosphere with a charming village feel.

Getting in

The road to Minca was rebuilt in 2015 and is in good condition. Shared taxi vans (colectivos) leave from the Plaza de Mercado in Santa Marta, costing COP$9,000 (Sep 2023) and taking 30-60 minutes. The van departs when full, which can take 20-30 minutes; last departure around 17:00. You can also pay COP$50,000 for an instant private car (June 2023). From the Santa Marta airport, take a bus to Plaza de Mercado, then the shared taxi van. Mototaxis from the Terminal de Transporte cost COP$8,000 during the day, COP$10,000 in the evening (Sept 2021). From Palomino or Tayrona, get off near the Rumbodromo Mamatoco and take a taxi or mototaxi.

Getting around

Mototaxis can be found in front of the Mono Mink office and charge COP$10,000 for short trips around town (can be haggled down, Jan 2023). A ride to Casa Elemento Hostel takes about 30 minutes and costs COP$20,000. Most roads in the village are dirt roads, so mototaxis are often the only way to quickly access remote guesthouses. Be aware that relying on mototaxis multiple times daily may significantly increase your budget. Public buses to Cerro Kennedy depart in the morning, at noon, and in the afternoon. Several agencies offer 4x4 transportation at excessive prices (over 10 times the mototaxi rate).

When to go

Minca can be visited year-round. The town sits at 580 m elevation, providing cooler temperatures than the Santa Marta coast. The dry season (December to April) offers the best hiking conditions. The wet season (May to November) brings lush greenery but expect afternoon rain. Weekends and public holidays see more visitors and longer travel times from Santa Marta due to traffic.

Where to stay

Minca has various accommodation options. Casa Loma is a 10-minute walk uphill from behind the church, offering hammocks, dorms, and privates with great views and communal vegetarian meals. Finca Hostal Bolivar near the main bridge offers rooms from COP$45,000-160,000 with river access. Hostal Mar y Monte, 1 km from the village near the telephone antenna, has camping, hammocks, dorms, and privates from COP$35,000-110,000 with pool and free WiFi. Emerald Green Guest House near the police station is Irish-run with rooms starting at COP$100,000. Casa Elemento offers dorms, tents, and hammocks with no WiFi; visiting requires a COP$10,000 entrance fee. Budget accommodations range from COP$35,000-100,000 per night for dorms.

Food and drink

Simple local restaurants offer lunch (soup, main dish, and drink) for COP$10,000 (Sept 2021) until around 12:45. Restaurant Costeño Jr and Panadería Muju are nearby options. For drinks, the most central bar is beside the bridge. Restaurant Santisabella has a bar with exotic drinks. Donde Raul is the spot for dancing. Hostels sell beers for COP$3,000-4,500, while locals sell beers at the waterfalls for COP$2,500. The Lazy Cat Cafe is popular with travelers for burgers, quesadillas, and woks. At Los Pinos lookout, ask for a delicious milkshake.

Things to do

Waterfalls are a major attraction: Pozo Azul has two small waterfalls for swimming with a 45-minute walk from town (or COP$8,000 by mototaxi one-way, Sep 2021), free entry. Oido del Mundo waterfall is a 45-minute hike with free entry. Marinka waterfall takes 1.5 hours to reach or COP$6,000 by moto taxi with COP$5,000 entry (Jan 2021). Los Pinos offers views to the coast and Santa Marta, a 2.5-hour walk. The Cerro Kennedy hike reaches 2,200 meters elevation difference with spectacular views of the Sierra Nevada; buses leave at 06:00, 09:30, 11:00, 13:00 for COP$10,000 (Feb 2024), or take a mototaxi for COP$30,000. Coffee tours at La Candelaria (COP$20,000) and La Victoria (COP$10,000) offer insight into local coffee production. Aiwa Spa offers biomassage sessions for COP$80,000.

Safety

Beware of sand flies (phlebotomines) which are known for nasty bites. Long clothing is your best protection as repellents are largely ineffective. Sand flies may be vectors of diseases such as Leishmaniasis. The area is generally safe, but standard precautions apply.

Connectivity

WiFi is limited in Minca. The only public WiFi outside hotels and hostels is at Lazy Cat restaurant (closed every Friday), which also has an internet café with a few computers. It is recommended to buy a SIM card with a data plan before arriving as connectivity is unreliable. Most hostels offer WiFi, though some like Casa Loma are deliberately wifi-free zones.

Budget

Minca is moderately priced for backpackers. Dorm beds range COP$35,000-100,000/night. Local meals cost COP$10,000-15,000. Mototaxis cost COP$8,000-20,000 per ride. Beer at hostels costs COP$2,500-4,500. Activities like waterfall visits are free to COP$5,000 entry, coffee tours COP$10,000-20,000. Daily budget of COP$80,000-150,000 is reasonable for budget travelers, excluding accommodation.

Day trips

Minca serves as a base for exploring the region. The Pozo Azul waterfall is a 45-minute walk. Oido del Mundo and Marinka waterfalls are popular day hikes. Los Pinos viewpoint is 2.5 hours walking. Cerro Kennedy requires a full day for the 14 km hike. La Candelaria Coffee Farm is a 1-hour hike or COP$12,000-15,000 by mototaxi.

Go next

From Minca, take a moto back down to Yucal and catch buses to Santa Marta (COP$7,000-8,000). For Palomino, Tayrona National Park, Las Tinajas, Calabazo, El Zaino, Los Naranjos, Buritaca, and Guachaca, take a shared taxi van for COP$8,000 or moto-taxi for COP$12,000 (Sept 2021) to the Rumbodromo Mamatoco, then flag down white buses toward Palomino. For Taganga, take the shared taxi van to Plaza de Mercado and ask for buses to Taganga. For Cartagena, take the shared taxi van to Rumbodromo Mamatoco, then transport to Santa Marta's Terminal de Transporte, or a direct moto-taxi for around COP$15,000 (Sept 2021).
