Overview
Mažeikiai is Lithuania's eighth-largest city with about 32,470 residents (2020), serving as a regional hub in northwestern Samogitia close to the Latvian border. It's not a major tourist destination but functions as a useful transit point between Lithuania and Latvia, with easy bus and train connections.

Limited hotel options; budget doubles from around €45. The Palma Hotel near the station is the most convenient for transit, while Pusyno Namai offers a rural escape in nearby Tirkšliai.
Connectivity
4G available from Tele2 and Telia throughout the city and along highways. Town centre has 5G from Telia and 4G from Bite as of early 2024.
Money
Lithuania uses the euro (€). ATMs available in town near banks. Credit cards accepted at supermarkets and larger hotels. Small local establishments may be cash-only.
Transport
The bus and railway stations are adjacent on the north side of town. Buses run 5 times daily from Vilnius (5 hr) and Kaunas (4.5 hr), and 4 times daily from Klaipėda (3-4 hr). Trains require a change at Šiauliai. Online tickets via autobusubilietai.lt and ltg.lt.
