Before you go
Connectivity
Major carriers (NTT Docomo, SoftBank, AU) provide coverage, but rural areas may have limited signal. Convenience store WiFi and cafes offer connectivity in towns.
Emergency
Emergency services reachable at 110 (police) and 119 (fire/ambulance). Local hospitals exist in Kuse.
Etiquette
At Yubara Onsen Sunayu, visitors are asked to cover their lower half since 2020. Do not approach wild monkeys at Kanba Falls.
Food
Hiruzen Yakisoba is the signature dish at multiple restaurants. Local sake manju and dango snacks are available at Katsuyama shops.
Money
Japan is cash-centric in rural areas. Carry sufficient yen as many small shops and onsen do not accept cards.
Transport
JR Kisuki Line connects Maniwa to the JR Hakubi Line at Kisaki Station. Buses run infrequently to major attractions. Renting a car is highly recommended for visiting spread-out sites.
