Overview

Mae Sot is Thailand's main land gateway to Myanmar, a bustling trade hub where Burmese migrants, refugees, and traders mix with Thai and international visitors. The town offers a genuinely multicultural experience impossible to find elsewhere in Thailand, from its vibrant Burmese market selling ethnic textiles, teak, and live food to gemstone shops and border commerce.

Mae Sot is notably multicultural with large Burmese migrant and refugee populations representing Karen, Mon, Hmong, and other ethnic minorities. Ethical shopping options include fair trade shops Weave and Borderline selling ethnic handicrafts.

Money

Thai Baht (THB) is the local currency. ATMs available but Myanmar kyat is not easily exchanged. Gemstone purchases require expertise—many sellers are reputable but inflated pricing for tourists is common.

Transport

Mae Sot has two bus stations—confirm which station your bus departs from. Domestic flights via Nok Air to Bangkok Don Mueang (4,000 baht). Local transport via bicycle (50 baht/day) or motorbike (150 baht/day) rental.
