Why Go

Hpa-an is the quiet, under-the-radar capital of Kayin State where limestone karsts rise dramatically from rice paddies and cave temples dot the countryside. Unlike busier Burmese destinations, Hpa-an has only been truly accessible since the 2012 ceasefire, giving it an authentic, frontier-town atmosphere. The town serves as a base for exploring caves (Saddan, Kaw Goon, Bat Cave), climbing Mount Zwegabin (723 m), and visiting lakes and monasteries—all without the crowds of Bagan or Inle Lake.

Getting In

There is no train station; all access is by road. From Mawlamyine, buses take about 2 hours for 1,200 kyat, or you can take a boat: 10,000 kyat per person (shared) or 70,000 kyat for a private charter, departing at 08:00 and taking about 3 hours. From Yangon, buses depart from Aung Mingalar Highway Station (6 hours, about 5,000 kyat, every 30-60 minutes). From Myawaddy at the Thai border, shared taxis cost 10,000 kyat and buses 5,000 kyat. Buses from Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) take 2½-3 hours with air-con for 5-7,000 kyat.

Getting Around

The main transport hub is the Clock Tower area where shared taxis and buses congregate. Most guesthouses rent motorbikes for about 6,000-7,000 kyat per day, with fuel costing another 1,000-1,500 kyat. Bicycles rent for 1,000 kyat. No road or bridge tolls apply to scooters or bicycles. Guesthouses like Soe Brothers and Galaxy Hotel also organize full-day tours (up to 6 people) for 30,000 kyat.

When to Go

The best views from Mount Zwegabin occur in the morning and during wet season when the air is clearest. The Bat Cave spectacle is best witnessed at sunset. Avoid visiting during monsoon flooding. The area has been relatively peaceful since the 2012 ceasefire, making it safer for travelers than in previous decades.

Where to Stay

Budget options cluster around the Clock Tower area. Soe Brothers Guesthouse (No.2/146 Thitsar St) offers fan rooms from US$5 and rents motorbikes with great maps. Golden Sky Guesthouse (2 West Thidar Ward) has clean rooms from 10,000-30,000 kyat with free WiFi and mountain views from the terrace. Than Lwan O 2 Guesthouse (2 Thida St) offers rooms at 8-15,000 kyat with WiFi and air-con. Mid-range options include Galaxy Motel (US$16-22) with breakfast included, and Tiger Hotel (US$20-25). Food and Drink

Street food is extremely cheap at Myo Ma Zay Gyi Market opposite the mosque: soup with stuffed tofu or tomatoes costs 200 kyat for soup and 100 kyat per stuffed item. Lucky Restaurant (Zay Tan St) serves good food and beer for 1,500-4,000 kyat. Khit Thit across the street offers larger portions for 2,000-6,000 kyat. San Ma Tau Restaurant (650 m east of Clock Tower) serves rice with 2 curries for 3,000 kyat with unlimited vegetarian options. New Day Bakery (Bogyoke St) serves fresh coffee from 600 kyat. A night market operates near Kan Thar Yar Lake. A sophisticated bar scene has yet to develop, though some shops near Galaxy Motel sell alcohol.

Things to Do

Hpa-an is famous for its surrounding caves, mountains, and green plains. Mount Zwegabin (723 m) offers spectacular 360° views and takes 4 hours to climb; the cable car to Lumbini Garden opened in 2017 (4,000 kyat for foreigners). Saddan Cave (300 m east of Clock Tower, follow Ka Lar Tan St south 14 km) requires a 1,000 kyat donation and has boats for lake trips. Kaw Goon Cave charges 3,000 kyat "donation" and features 13th-century rock carvings. The Bat Cave (9 km away, 1,000 kyat entry) offers an evening bat emergence spectacle, though it has diminished due to local disturbances. Kyauk Kalap features a miraculously balanced rock with a pagoda on top in the middle of a fish-filled lake. Yae Ta Khon has a scenic swimming pool (women not allowed in upper pool) surrounded by white pagodas.

Safety

Hpa-an is generally safe for travelers, though the area has a complex political history with the Karen conflict. Since the 2012 ceasefire, the region has been relatively peaceful. Take care when driving motorbikes at night, especially on roads to the Bat Cave. Some roads can be muddy and difficult during wet season. The area northwest of the Clock Tower is where shared pick-up vans to Kinpun depart.

Connectivity

Most guesthouses and hotels offer free WiFi. Mobile coverage is available but data speeds can be slow. Power plugs use Type C, D, and F (European round-pin and British-style three-pin). It's advisable to purchase a local SIM card in Yangon or Mawlamyine before arriving for better connectivity options.

The extensive scooter route covers multiple sites including Kaw Ka Taung Cave, Mat Ka Na Bridge, Yae Ta Khon, and Kyauk Kalap Pagoda.
