Why Go

Mawlamyine (population ~326,000) is Myanmar's fourth-largest city and the capital of Mon State. Famous for nearby attractions including the world's largest reclining Buddha 18 km south and a golden rock formation 20 km north, it serves as the first stop for many travelers coming from Thailand and a good base for exploring southeastern Myanmar.

Get Around

When to Go

The best time to visit is during the dry season (November to February). Travelers heading to Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) should be prepared for an overnight stay among thousands of pilgrims at the summit, bringing ear plugs and a warm sleeping bag regardless of season.

Where to Stay

Budget guesthouses line Lower Main Road and Strand Rd. Aurora Guesthouse offers fan rooms from US$7 single (AC rooms US$15/25), praised for being nicer than Breeze Inn. Breeze Inn (US$8 single, from US$14 double) includes breakfast on a terrace with river views. Mid-range options include Cinderella Hotel (US$15-80 with dorms, large breakfast included) and Pinlon Pann Motel (US$20-25, very fast Wi-Fi, 24-hr ATM). Food and Drink

Night market food stalls on Strand Rd (north of YKKO restaurant) offer barbecue (100-200 kyat per piece), cheap seafood, vegetarian dishes, and rice soups for 1,000-2,500 kyat. Local Mon curry restaurants like Daw Yi (corner of Strand Rd and Uze Na Pagoda Street) serve curry sets with tea, soup, and salad for 3,000 kyat. Things to Do

Kyaik Tan Lan Pagoda on the hill in the northeast offers panoramic views and is a great sunset point. Mahamuni Paya (next to Kyaik Tan Lan) contains a century-old Buddha replica with fewer tourists than Mandalay. Ogre Island (Bilu Island) across the river features cottage industries (weaving, chalkboards, hats, rubber bands); take the ferry (600 kyat) and hire a guide, or arrange tours from Breeze Inn (18,000 kyat per person). Shampoo Island (Gaung Say Kyun) costs 3,000 kyat for the boat. The world's largest reclining Buddha (Win Sein Taw Ya) is 18 km south with dozens of monk statues along the approach. Pa-Auk Tawya Monastery is a tranquil meditation center where visitors can join monks for the 11:00 meal. Kan Gyi Lake and Pagoda (26 km south near Mudon) is walkable but women are not allowed to swim.

Safety

High tide in the mornings at Ogre Island means disembarking into watery mud; wear sandals. Women are prohibited from swimming in Kan Gyi Lake, as locals believe something terrible will happen. The concrete track pagoda (19.7 km north) charges 500 kyat camera fee; go early on workdays to likely have the place to yourself. Kyauk Ta Lone hill (west of main road) has two tops, only one permitted for women; an open shed on top allows overnight stays with a mosquito net and sleeping bag recommended.

Budget activities include pagoda visits (mostly free), Ogre Island tour (18,000 kyat including guide), and boat trips. Mix USD and kyat; guesthouse prices quoted in USD but kyat often accepted.

Day Trips

Kyaiktiyo (Golden Rock) is 3-4 hours away with buses at 07:30 and 09:30 (7,000 kyat). The famous golden rock balances precariously on a cliff and is Myanmar's most iconic sight. Kyaikto near Kyaiktiyo is also reachable by train from Mawlamyine. Bago (highest pagoda Shwemawdaw) is 5-10,000 kyat by bus with departures at 07:00, 08:00, 09:00, and 12:30. Pa-Auk Tawya Monastery can be visited in a morning by taking a local pick-up 10 km south.

    Breeze Inn Guesthouse

Well-known guesthouse with friendly staff. Mr Anthony is an old man and full of stories including useful advice, and he likes to talk. The place is run down and a little unkempt. Rooms are smelly even if you have a window. Sleep in short beds with rock hard, old and lain through mattresses (really no elasticity left) in rooms with thin walls. Rooms in the back seem to be much better value for little extra cost, especially the beautiful colonial era style room for about US$40. Breakfast is included (coffee or tea, toast, butter and jam, boiled egg, banana) and served at the terrace with river view. WiFi in the common.
