Overview
Kyaiktiyo is one of Myanmar's most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites, famous for the Golden Rock (Kyaiktiyo Pagoda) — a golden boulder balanced precariously on a cliff edge, held in place by two hairs of Buddha according to legend. Unlike purely tourist-focused destinations, this is a living site visited by thousands of Burmese devotees daily, particularly during high season.

Before you go
Accommodation
Sleeping on the pagoda floor at Kyaiktiyo is a unique budget option (bring mattress and sleeping bag). Kinpun has the widest accommodation range from $8 dorms to mid-range hotels.
Culture
This is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site, not a tourist attraction. Women are not permitted to place gold leaves on the Golden Rock. Cameras prohibited at the rock.
Money
Local currency is Myanmar kyat (MMK). Budget 10,000-15,000 kyat extra for the Golden Rock visit including tourist surcharge. US dollar prices appear in some hotels but kyat is preferred.
Transport
Pilgrim trucks from Kinpun to Kyaiktiyo cost 1,500-2,000 kyat; cable car 10,000-14,000 kyat. No vehicle access beyond Kinpun — everyone walks or takes trucks/cable car.
Weather
Rain season (May-October) brings mist that can obscure the Golden Rock; dry season offers clearer views. Nights on the mountain get cold regardless of season.
