Why go?
Kodaikanal is a misty hill station perched at 7,200 feet in the Palani Hill Range of Western Ghats, offering a cooler escape from Tamil Nadu's plains. Known as the Princess of Hill Stations, it features a star-shaped lake, cascading waterfalls, pine forests, and trekking trails with views over 6,600-foot chasms. The town has a relaxed atmosphere, chocolate shops, and unique flora including the Kurinji flower that blooms once every 12 years (last in 2018).

Get in
Kodaikanal does not have its own airport or railway station. The nearest major transport hubs are Madurai (around 120 km) and Dindigul (100 km), with buses and taxis connecting to the hill station. The winding road approach through the Western Ghats offers scenic views but involves sharp curves. Private taxis from Madurai take approximately 3-4 hours. State transport buses run from major Tamil Nadu cities to Kodaikanal Bus Stand.

The central Kodaikanal town is compact and walkable. Taxis have fixed high charges with a minimum fare of ₹300 (Feb 2026) including 3 km, and a drop charge of ₹500 to Vattakanal village. Mountain bikes can be hired from stalls around the lake for those fit enough to handle the hilly terrain. Auto-rickshaws are not available in the central area.

Stay safe
Monkeys are common in some areas—carry food carefully and avoid abrupt movements, especially with children. Do not leave cash or valuables in hotel rooms. Always cross-check bills at hotels, restaurants, and lounges for errors. Trails like Dolphin's Nose and Devil's Kitchen have hidden ravines and steep drops—watch your footing carefully. Some areas around the lake are poorly lit at night with stray dogs; walk between 6-7PM and return before dark. Diesel pollution affects the town center similar to other Indian cities.

Connectivity
Mobile coverage is available from major Indian carriers. WiFi is common in mid-range and upscale hotels and restaurants, though speeds may be inconsistent. Power outlets use Indian Type C/D/M sockets (230V/50Hz). Consider purchasing a local SIM card in Madurai or Dindigul before ascending to the hill station for better connectivity options. Water ATMs throughout town allow bottle refills rather than direct drinking.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory at restaurants; rounding up bills is common. Bargaining is appropriate at local markets but less common in fixed-price shops.
