Overview
Pollachi is a low-key Western Ghats base for markets, dams, tea-country roads, wildlife reserves, and trekking. Its commercial streets feel more local than the nearby hill stations while still opening onto strong day trips.
Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil
Why Go
Pollachi is a commercial hub 40 km south of Coimbatore that draws visitors for its famous sandhai (market) — the second largest in India — and its role as a cinema filming destination earning it the nickname 'Mini Kodambakkam.' The town sits at the foothills of the Western Ghats, offering easy access to dams, wildlife reserves, tea estates, and trekking trails without the crowds of nearby hill stations like Ooty or Munnar.

Getting In

Get Around
Local town buses serve nearby attractions; Route 37A and 37B go to Aliyar Dam. Buses toward Anaimalai, Sethumadai, and Valparai pass through the Pollachi Market area. Autorickshaws and taxis are available for reaching more remote sites like Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (48 km) or Topslip (37 km).

When To Go
Pollachi enjoys a pleasant climate year-round thanks to its Western Ghats location, with temperatures rarely exceeding 35°C even in summer. Both the North-East and South-West monsoons bring significant rainfall, making the region lush. Avoid visiting Parambikulam Tiger Reserve during monsoon season (June–August) when trails become difficult.

Accommodation options cluster near the bus station and along Coimbatore Road and Palakkad Road. Things To Do
Boating opportunities exist at Aliyar, Amaravathy, and Thirumoorthy Dams. Wildlife enthusiasts can take elephant or van safaris at Topslip within the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, or explore Parambikulam Tiger Reserve by boat or jeep. Trekking is popular at Topslip, Parambikulam, and Valparai. The Pollachi Market — especially the jaggery market at Sandhai Pettai — is worth a visit to witness one of Asia's largest jaggery and cattle markets.
