Why go?

Madurai is one of India's oldest continuously inhabited cities, a major Hindu pilgrimage centre famed for the Meenakshi Amman Temple with its intricate gopuram towers and ancient sculptures. The Pandyan and Madurai Nayak kings built temples in the traditional Tamilian style over centuries, and the city remains a cultural hub promoting Tamil language through Sangams. Beyond temples, Madurai serves as an ideal base for exploring the extreme south of India with hill stations like Kodaikanal and pilgrimage sites like Rameswaram reachable by bus or train within a day.

Getting in

Madurai is connected by air through Madurai Airport (IXM), served by domestic airlines including Air India, Air India Express, and SpiceJet with flights to Chennai, Bangalore, and other major cities. The city is also a major rail hub with Madurai Junction railway station on the southern railway line, providing connections to Chennai, Bangalore, Trivandrum, and other destinations. The Periyar (Central) bus stand handles state and private bus services.

Getting around

Local transport is primarily by bus, with most routes departing from Periyar bus stand. Auto rickshaws are widely available but require negotiation and bargaining on fare costs. Cabs can be hired for longer distances or more comfortable travel. Car rental options exist for those preferring self-driven vehicles. The city is walkable in the temple area but distances between sites warrant motorized transport.

When to go

The climate chart shows Madurai has temperatures ranging from 20.9°C to 38°C year-round, with monsoon seasons in October-November (107mm rainfall) and April-May (80.7mm). Summer months from April to June can be extremely hot (37-38°C), so visitors should stay hydrated with coconut water and avoid peak afternoon heat. The best time to visit is from November to February when temperatures are more moderate (20-31°C range). Festivals like Chittrai Festival at Alagar Koyil (April-May) and the float festival at Vandiyur Mariamman Teppakulam (January during Thai Poosam) draw large crowds.

Things to do

The Meenakshi Amman Temple (hours 5AM-12:30PM and 4-10PM) is the spiritual heart of Madurai, featuring remarkable gopuram sculptures, yaali mythical creatures, and ancient ceiling paintings. Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal (₹50 foreigners/₹10 Indians) displays 17th-century architecture with a sound and light show. Gandhi Memorial Museum near the river houses the leader's bloodstained dhoti and a library on India's freedom struggle (free entry, 10AM-1PM and 2PM-6PM). Pilgrimage sites include Thiruparankundram Dargah atop a hill, Alagar Koyil 20km away, and Koodal Azhagar Temple with three lord postures. Samanar Hills (10km west) contain Jain monuments dating 2nd-century BCE to 12th-century CE. Boating is available at Vandiyur Lake.

Safety

Madurai is relatively safe with the city staying awake through the night for commerce, though there is no western-style nightlife. Visitors should avoid wandering or shopping after dark. Be aware of touts and pick-pockets, particularly in crowded areas near the temple and markets. Women should avoid wearing provocative clothing. Political activity in the area can occasionally cause traffic diversions or shop shutdowns. Emergency contact numbers are displayed at prominent locations. Petty theft and pick-pocketing occur in crowded locations, though mugging is rare. Auto rickshaw drivers have occasionally mugged passengers at night, though this is extremely rare.

The Madurai-Kodaikanal road passes through Vaththalakundu with Manjalar Dam, Siddhar Malai, and Peranai dam, plus temples like Sendrayaperumal Temple in Old-Batalagundu. Etiquette and respect

Madurai residents are proud of their city and heritage, so jokes about it are not tolerated. Refrain from making jokes about individuals or families, as this could cause serious problems. The standard greeting is Vanakkam with hands folded at chest level. Locals are friendly and willing to help, but visitors should beware of touts who may give misleading information or overcharge. When visiting temples, dress modestly covering shoulders and legs. Photography restrictions apply inside temple premises.

    Heritage Madurai

The major part of this property is the result of the conversion of what was company accommodation, then a British club, into a hotel complex. Some newer rooms and facilities have been added. The basic rooms are in 2-storey blocks of around 6 units. Each room is very spacious; they have business class rooms and the luxury villas with plunge pool and a huge bathroom is really unique. The food, which is good in choice, presentation and quality, however, the bar is surprisingly average. Very good service and all the amenities of a modern hotel.

    Hotel Chentoor

Hotel not far from Shri Meenaski. Hot water and TV are available. Restaurant on the top of the hotel with a nice view on the town and the temple.

  • sleep

    Hotel Germanus

Hotel Germanus is one of the old 5-star hotels. It used to be one of the best hotels in Madurai. The rooms are functional, comfortable, not spacious though, but acceptable. But for ₹3000 or more standard single per night in Madurai one expects more. It’s now comparable only to a mid-budget hotel. The complimentary buffet breakfast included idlis, vadas, parathas and eggs to order, is quite ample but not tasty. The view from the rooftop is simply amazing. You can catch the glimpse of the Meenakshi Amman Temple from here.

    Recorded price: ₹3000 upwards

  • sleep

    Hotel North Gate

The rooms are of fairly good size, though the front side rooms overlooking the road are bit noisy. The cleanliness of the rooms and bathroom is very good. The room service is fast. The roof garden restaurant with kebabs in the evening with city view is good, but the food is bit spicy. The complimentary breakfast had nice tasty South Indian and continental food. The basement car parking at rear side was not convenient, but valet parking helped.

  • eat

    Amma Mess

Amma (Tamil for mother). This mess (restaurant) is a popular among the locals residents and those travelling from neighboring cities. Their lunch is very popular. Don't miss their speciality dishes like rabbit biriyani, dove biriyani, crab omelette and bone marrow omelette.
