Why Go?

Munnar is a British-era hill station at 1,600 m elevation in Kerala, famous for its endless tea plantations started by the British. The region offers the most pleasant temperatures in Kerala and serves as a popular honeymoon destination for Indian tourists. Visitors come for the colonial-era charm, tea estate views, wildlife spotting (especially the endangered Nilgiri Tahr), and treks to Anamudi Peak—the highest in South India at 2,695 m. The area transforms every 12 years when the violet neelakurinji flower blooms across the hills.

Getting In

Munnar has no airport or railway station; the nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (110 km), and nearest railheads are Aluva (120 km) and Ernakulam (140 km). KSRTC and private buses connect Munnar to major cities including Coimbatore, Madurai, and Thekkady. Bus routes include the southern road to Adimali/Ernakulam and the southeastern road to Poopara/Theni. Shared auto rickshaws serve less-frequented routes to Mattupetty and Top Station.

Get Around

KSRTC buses and private buses operate alongside auto rickshaws (called 'tuktuks'). Auto rickshaw drivers offer high fixed prices to tourists—the normal rate is ₹30 for the first kilometer and ₹15 per additional kilometer (February 2026). Shared auto rickshaws run on routes like Mattupetty and Top Station. Gokulam Bike Rental near the High Altitude Sports Stadium in Old Munnar offers motorcycles for ₹500 per day (October 2017); a valid motorcycle license is required. Cycling through tea estates to Madupatty (14 km) is a popular activity.

When to Go

The post-monsoon season between October and March is considered the best time to visit Munnar. Afternoon temperatures range from 22-26°C year-round, while nights and early mornings cool to 12-16°C. Winter nights can be colder—bring warm clothing. The rainy season runs from April to November, when a raincoat is essential. Eravikulam National Park closes annually around February-March for the Nilgiri Tahr breeding program; visitors should check park status before planning trips. The neelakurinji flower last bloomed from August to October 2018.
