Why Go

Kigali is Rwanda's political and commercial capital, a clean and ordered city spread across multiple hills that often surprises first-time visitors with its tidiness and safety. The city is a major draw for long-term expats, NGO workers, and digital nomads who appreciate the relaxed lifestyle, reliable infrastructure, and the ability to raise children safely. While it feels more like a prosperous East African business hub than a typical African capital, Kigali remains the gateway for most visitors to Rwanda and an essential stop for understanding the country's history and future.

Getting In

Kigali International Airport (KGL) is located in Kicukiro District, about 5 km from the city centre. RwandAir operates the most flights, including routes from London Heathrow. Nyabugogo bus station is the main hub for buses arriving and departing to many parts of Rwanda and international destinations. Plastic bags are illegal in Rwanda, so bring only reusable bags.

Getting Around

Kigali is a sprawling city organized by suburbs, with most better restaurants and hotels located away from the traditional downtown area. Moto-taxis are readily available for short hops around the city, typically costing around FRw500 per ride. Public transport departs mostly from the northeast of Nyabugogo station.

When To Go

Kigali enjoys a mild climate year-round with temperatures ranging from 15-28°C. The long rainy season runs from March to May, and the short rains occur from October to December. The dry seasons (June-September and January-February) are ideal for gorilla trekking and outdoor activities. The city can feel quite cool in the evenings due to its elevation.

Where To Stay

Accommodation in downtown Kigali is noticeably more expensive than neighboring capitals like Kampala and Nairobi, with many budget options from older guidebooks no longer existing. Outside the city centre, good budget options can be found in areas like Nyamirambo, Gacuriro, and near Nyabugogo bus station. Budget rooms start from around FRw10,000-13,000, while mid-range hotels range from US$30-75. Luxury properties like Hotel des Mille Collines and Kigali Serena Hotel cater to high-end travelers.

Food And Drink

Kigali offers excellent dining thanks to Belgian culinary influence, fresh vegetables, freshwater fish, and plenty of livestock. A combination of these factors makes eating here some of the best in the region at affordable prices. Regional restaurants take their time—expect 45 minutes to 1 hour wait between ordering and food arriving, especially for dinner. For quick lunches, African buffets around the city allow you to pile your plate high and be out the door in 30 minutes. Restaurants are organized by suburb, with main concentrations along Boulevard de la Revolution and in neighborhoods like Kiyovu and Kimihurura.

Things To Do

The Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre (open daily, free/donation) is the most significant site, housing over 250,000 victims and a deeply moving museum with audio guides available. The Presidential Palace Museum in Kanombe (FRw6,000) offers guided tours of former President Habyarimana's residence. Art lovers should visit Inema Arts Centre (07:00-18:30 daily) for Rwandan artwork, while the Kandt House Museum showcases natural history and city views. For active visitors, the 10-km Gisozi circuit behind Gaculiro provides flat running routes with rice paddy views. The Nyamirambo Women's Center offers guided walking tours, cooking classes, and handicraft experiences.

Safety

Kigali is relatively safe and friendly compared to other African capitals. Keep your eyes open and your wallet out of reach of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas. Avoid walking after dark if possible, particularly alone. Take extra precaution in the area between New Cadillac Nightclub and Carwash bar. Police officers are generally helpful if you're in a bind, though don't expect speedy results.

Connectivity

Two main cellular networks—MTN and Airtel—offer good 4G/LTE services throughout the city. Internet Service Providers include Canal Box and Mango Telecom. English language broadcasts are available from Royal FM on 94.3MHz, and French broadcasts from Radio France Internationale (RFI) on 91.9MHz. To use mobile money, you'll need a local SIM card registered with your passport.

Budget

Kigali can be expensive for imported goods—wine, olive oil, and breakfast cereals cost significantly more than in neighboring countries. Costs can be lowered considerably by buying Rwandan or East African Community goods, particularly Kenyan products which often cost half the imported European equivalent. Daily budget for a backpacker ranges from FRw30,000-50,000 for basic accommodation and meals, rising to FRw80,000+ for comfortable mid-range travel. Local products like Rwandan coffee (FRw4,000/500g) and honey (FRw1,750/500g) make good souvenirs.

Day Trips

Volcanoes National Park, home to mountain gorillas and the setting for Dian Fossey's research, is accessible as a day trip from Kigali (approximately 2-3 hours drive). Gorilla trekking permits cost US$600 cash, with Mastercard also accepted. Enquire at ORTPN (Rwanda Office for Tourism and National Parks) on Boulevard de la Révolution. Nyandungu Eco-park offers a 120-hectare restored wetland within the city for nature lovers.

Go Next

Beyond Volcanoes National Park, Nyabugogo bus station offers connections to many parts of Rwanda and neighboring countries. Buses depart to destinations throughout the country, making Kigali an excellent base for exploring Rwanda's national parks, genocide memorial sites, and Lake Kivu.
