Why go?

Ruhengeri (also called Musanze) is Rwanda's adventure capital, sitting at the doorstep of Volcanoes National Park where the rare mountain gorilla lives. The city of about 153,000 serves as the base for one of Africa's most iconic wildlife experiences: spending an hour with habituated gorilla families. Beyond gorillas, the Virunga Mountains offer volcano climbs, golden monkey treks, and visits to Dian Fossey's tomb. The town itself has lively markets, a modern cathedral, and panoramic views of eight volcanoes.

Getting in

Buses from Kigali's Nyabugogo station depart every 30 minutes for FRw 3,000 (April 2024), taking 2 hours. Buy tickets at individual company offices on-site rather than in advance for the best seat selection. Recommended operators include Virunga Express, Kigali Bus Service, Ritco, and International Express. From Gisenyi, buses bound for Kigali pass through Ruhengeri every 30 minutes, taking 1 hour 20 minutes and costing FRw 1,900 (2024).

Getting around

Ruhengeri is compact enough to walk across in 30-40 minutes along the main road. The most common transport is the moto-taxi, with negotiable fares typically ranging FRw 500-1,000 (2024) for cross-town rides. No fixed public transit system exists, so moto-taxis and walking are the primary options for independent travelers.

When to go

The best time for gorilla trekking and volcano hikes is during the dry seasons: June-September and December to February, when trails are less muddy. The long rainy season (March-May) and short rains (October-November) make hiking more difficult and some routes may be closed. Gorilla permits sell out months in advance, particularly in peak season, so book through tour operators or the Rwanda Tourism Board (ORTPN) well before your trip.
