Overview

Kisoro is a small town of about 18,000 people but the gateway to Uganda's most iconic wildlife experience: mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. At 1,900m elevation, the cool mountain air, volcanic scenery dominated by Mount Muhabura (4,127m) and Mount Karisimbi (4,507m), and the lush green patchwork of subsistence farms make this one of Uganda's most scenic and hospitable regions.

Why go?

Kisoro is a small town of about 18,000 people but the gateway to Uganda's most iconic wildlife experience: mountain gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. At 1,900m elevation, the cool mountain air, volcanic scenery dominated by Mount Muhabura (4,127m) and Mount Karisimbi (4,507m), and the lush green patchwork of subsistence farms make this one of Uganda's most scenic and hospitable regions. Market days on Monday and Thursday draw cross-border traders from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unlike Uganda's busier safari hubs, Kisoro retains a frontier feel while offering world-class experiences.

Getting in

Kisoro sits at the far southwestern corner of Uganda, hard against the borders of both Rwanda and the DRC. The main overland approach is by bus from Kampala, a 10+ hour journey costing USh20,000-25,000 on night buses operated by Gateway Bus Service (departs 17:00 and 20:00, arriving 04:00 and 07:00) or Baby Coaches (departs 19:15, arriving 06:00). For those flying in, Kisoro Aerodrome has a 1,300m paved runway about 2km east of town with at least one daily semi-charter to Entebbe; AeroLink flies Cessna Grand Caravans on a semi-scheduled timetable. You can sometimes bargain for charter seats.

Getting around

Boda-bodos (motorcycle taxis) are the primary local transport in Kisoro. For longer stays, you can hire a local's 125-200cc motorcycle for USh20,000-30,000 per day. A 4x4 with driver costs about four times as much. The surrounding countryside is spectacular—volcanic soil creates rolling green hills with terraced vegetable gardens. The road to Hotel Mucha (8km northwest) includes three rock cascades and is one of the worst in the district.

When to go

Kisoro is accessible year-round but the dry seasons (December-February and June-August) are best for gorilla trekking and hiking. The region receives ample rainfall, keeping the landscape green and verdant. Market days are Monday and Thursday, when traders from the DRC cross into Uganda for goods unavailable in their country. In November 2013, about 1,500 M23 fighters surrendered in Mgahinga National Park a few kilometres south and were held on Kisoro's football pitch until being moved east—the district has seen periodic refugee influxes from DRC.

Where to stay

Budget accommodation ranges from camping at USh19,000 per person at Amajambere Iwacu Iwacu Community Camp (right at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park entrance) to dorms at Golden Monkey Guest House for USh20,000. Mid-range options include SawaSawa Guest House with en suite chalets from USh34,600-49,300 and Hotel Virunga with rooms from USh14,000-30,000. For splurges, Hotel Mucha (USD110 single including breakfast and town collection) sits beautifully by the Mucha River with excellent bathrooms, while Lake Mutanda Resort offers stilted cottages from USD130 with free WiFi in the restaurant. Cash only at Travellers Rest Hotel, which has the best food in town and a log fire on cool evenings.

Food and drink

The best food in Kisoro is at Golden Monkey Guest House, run by helpful staff who may even open the kitchen late evening. Travellers Rest Hotel serves excellent cooked meals (book by 15:30) with bacon cooked the English way—smoke-cured rashers at USh50,000/kg, so expect modest portions. Coffee Pot Café (opposite Golden Monkey) offers yummy desserts and excellent coffee with WiFi, open M-Sa 08:30-21:30. Mucha Bistro serves carrot cake for USh6,000 and espresso macchiato for USh4,500 in elegant green surroundings. Most local meals will involve posho (cornmeal porridge), beans, and matoke (steamed green bananas).

Things to do

Gorilla trekking in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the main draw—these are the only places outside a zoo where you can see mountain gorillas face to face. Nkuringo Walking Safaris (opposite Coffee Pot Café at Gorilla Junction) offer guided walks with English-speaking rangers from USh40 per group plus extras, with routes seeing L'hoest monkeys, colobus, and blue monkeys; canoeing Lake Mutanda adds USD16 per person. Milestone Safaris specializes in walking snake safaris to Lake Mutanda for USD25 per person, where you'll likely see black mambas, rock pythons, and spitting cobras, followed by dugout canoe through reed beds. Echuya Eco-tourism Association offers forest hikes for USh30,000 with cultural visits to Batwa and other communities. Three-day game drives to Queen Elizabeth National Park's Ishasha sector (to see tree-climbing lions) cost from Kisoro at USD25 per person plus accommodation.

Safety

Kisoro is generally safe for travelers, though the district's relative isolation means medical facilities are basic. Kisoro District Hospital has only one doctor per 40,000 people, and diagnostic equipment like X-ray and ultrasound machines are frequently out of service. The district has seen sporadic refugee influxes from the DRC, but the situation has been stable. Armed guards protect vehicles at Golden Monkey Guest House overnight. Avoid driving at night outside the town center. The main risks are standard travel concerns: petty theft, road accidents on rough mountain roads, and health issues requiring evacuation to Kampala or Entebbe.

Connectivity

Internet access is limited: IP Planet Internet Cafe (opposite Mayor's Gardens on Bunagana Rd, M-Sa 08:00-20:00, Su 15:00-20:00) charges USh50 per minute or USh3,000 for 70 minutes via wired Ethernet. Coffee Pot Café offers faster but pricier WiFi for USh6,000 per hour. Mobile coverage exists for Airtel and MTN but data speeds are slow and unreliable. The nearest international airport is Entebbe, about 8-10 hours by road. Power outages are common; most better hotels have backup generators.

Budget

Daily budget in Kisoro for a backpacker runs USh50,000-80,000 (approximately USD13-22): dorm accommodation USh20,000-38,000, meals USh15,000-25,000, local transport USh5,000-15,000. Gorilla permits (not included in above) cost USD700-800 per person through Uganda Wildlife Authority. Walking safaris are USD25-40, motorcycle hire USh20,000-30,000 per day. The local currency is Ugandan Shilling (USh). Market days (Monday and Thursday) are good for cheap food and goods.

Day trips

Lake Mutanda is the most accessible day trip—a stunning volcanic lake with reed beds, islands, and viewpoints reachable via a steep, rocky road. Nkuringo Walking Safaris and Milestone Safaris both use Lake Mutanda as a destination. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park are usually full-day experiences due to permit schedules and travel time, though staying at Amajambere Iwacu Community Camp at the park entrance allows early morning starts. The Echuya Central Forest Reserve is about 30 minutes outside Kisoro on the road to Kabale. The Virunga Volcanoes (accessible from Uganda side) are extinct or long dormant, though eruptions occurred in DRC in 2006 and 2010. Fort Portal's crater lakes and Toro Kingdom historic sights require at least an overnight stay.

Etiquette

Kisoro is conservative and rural—dress modestly, especially when visiting markets or religious sites. Cover shoulders and knees outside beach contexts. The local languages are Rufumbira and Rukiga, though many also speak Luganda, Runyankore, and Kiswahili. Ask permission before photographing people. Tipping is not expected in local restaurants but appreciated in tourist-oriented establishments. Bargaining is appropriate in markets but not in shops with fixed prices. When visiting Batwa or other indigenous communities on cultural tours, ask your guide about appropriate behavior and consider bringing small gifts. At Potter's Village (orphanage and premature baby care center), visitors are welcome M-F 10:00-17:00 but should be quiet around sleeping babies, especially 11:00-13:00.

Go next

From Kisoro, the main overland route is back to Kampala (10+ hours, USh20,000-25,000 by night bus). To Rwanda, the Cyanika border crossing is accessible via the old road from Kisoro. Kabale, the larger regional hub, is about 45 minutes north with better facilities and more transport options. For wildlife enthusiasts, Queen Elizabeth National Park is a 4-5 hour drive; Fort Portal's crater lakes and Toro Kingdom culture are another day trip or overnight. Entebbe/Kampala for international flights is the main exit point. Kisoro Aerodrome has semi-regular flights to Entebbe.
