Why Go

Kenting National Park sits at Taiwan's southern tip, offering pristine beaches, dramatic coastal cliffs, and lush tropical forests. The area is famous for its beautiful beaches and diverse vegetation, making it a popular escape from Taipei's urban density. Unlike many Asian beach destinations, Kenting retains a relatively local character with affordable accommodation and authentic seafood restaurants. The park offers excellent surfing at South Bay, hiking through the forest recreation area, and stunning geological formations like Longpan Park and Fongchueisha Dune.

When to Go

The best time to visit Kenting is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when temperatures are pleasant and rainfall is minimal. Summer months draw the largest crowds, especially during school holidays, and prices for accommodation can inflate significantly. During typhoon season, waves can become dangerously rough and all beaches may be closed for safety. Winter (December-February) sees fewer tourists but some facilities have reduced hours.

Getting In

Kenting is accessible by bus from Kaohsiung, with Bus Line 88 operating 24 hours daily to Kaohsiung city. Travelers arriving at Zuoying HSR station can take a taxi for approximately NT$120 to reach Kenting. The park is best explored by scooter or rental car, as public transportation within the park boundaries is limited. Ji Jing Guest House near the fuel station before entering Kenting offers fuel-powered scooters at NT$500 per 24 hours (negotiable to NT$450).

Getting Around

Scooter rental is the most popular and flexible way to explore Kenting National Park, with daily rates around NT$500 including fuel. Taxis are available but can be expensive for multiple stops. There is no reliable public bus service within the park area. Driving along the coastal roads offers spectacular ocean views, and parking fees at attractions typically range from NT$10-50.

Where to Stay

Hengchun town provides the most affordable accommodation options, with Light Blue Hostel offering doubles from NT$500 and serving as a better base for exploring than pricier Kenting proper. Kenting Youth Hostel costs NT$300 per night with free WiFi and friendly staff. Budget travelers should avoid peak summer months when prices double or triple. For those seeking beach access, Château Beach Resort (made famous by the movie Cape No.7) is the only hotel with direct beach access from terraced rooms.

Food and Drink

Thai cuisine is surprisingly prevalent in Kenting, with virtually every restaurant now offering Thai dishes alongside Chinese and Western options. Santosa Restaurant near the 7-11 on Nanwan strip serves cheap and delicious Thai food for about NT$150 per person, with seafood fried rice and basil chicken being local favorites. The Kenting Night Market operates along Kenting Road in the evenings, while Hengchun Night Market offers a quieter alternative (closes around 21:00-22:00). For vegetarian options, 人和素食館 on Hengnan Road weighs plates at approximately NT$100. Fresh tropical fruit is widely available from mobile stalls, and seafood is exceptionally fresh and reasonably priced.

Things to Do

The Eulanbi Lighthouse at Taiwan's southernmost point costs NT$40 to enter and offers pleasant hiking trails near the ocean. Longpan Park features stunning green cliffs and coastline created by geological processes, often considered more impressive than paid attractions. The Chuhuo Eternal Fire (出火特別景觀區) displays natural gas escaping through porous rock, constantly burning and creating a dramatic sunset atmosphere where visitors can light smaller flames themselves. Maobitou offers black cliff formations and coastal views, though some consider it overpriced compared to nearby Longpan Park. Sheding Natural Park provides a free 1.5-2 hour walking trail with views of the southern coast.

Safety

Like all of Taiwan, the Kenting area is very safe from violent crime, though travelers should use common sense protecting valuables and avoid leaving items visible in cars. Stray dogs are ubiquitous throughout the area; while not aggressive, they may harbor disease or parasites and should not be approached or petted. Weekend tourists create pedestrian hazards by parking on sidewalks and entryways, making careful walking necessary near popular attractions. During typhoon season, all beaches may close due to dangerous surf conditions.

Connectivity

Taiwan's major telecom providers offer SIM cards with good coverage throughout the Kenting area. Free WiFi is commonly available at hostels, restaurants, and some tourist attractions. Taiwan uses Type A and Type B power outlets (two-pin flat or two-pin perpendicular), with standard 110V/60Hz electricity.

The ZuoYing HSR station is accessible by taxi from the bus drop-off point for approximately NT$120. For those continuing southward along Taiwan's coast, the ferry to Donggang or onward bus connections to Taitung provide access to the east coast.
