Overview
Karkala is a small town in the Tulu Nadu region of coastal Karnataka, about 60 km from Mangalore. It was a major center for Jainism during the Maurya and Vijaynagar empires, and still preserves architectural marvels from those periods.

Language
Tulu is the primary language of local Hindu and Jain communities. Kannada and Konkani are also widely spoken. English is understood in tourist areas.

Carry cash as card acceptance at local hotels and restaurants in Karkala may be limited. ATMs should be available but verify before relying on them.
Transport
Karkala is best accessed by bus or private vehicle from Mangalore (60 km) or Udupi. NH169 connects the town to Kudremukh and the Western Ghats.
