Why Go?
Udupi is best known for its vegetarian South Indian cuisine — Udupi restaurants serving dishes like khao soi alternatives, golibaje, and filter coffee have spread across India. Beyond food, the town holds spiritual significance as the home of the Sri Krishna Temple and Madhvacharya's 13th-century monastery. The nearby suburb Manipal adds a youthful energy with its international student population, while the coastline offers quieter beaches than Goa.

Getting In
Udupi lies on NH-66 (formerly NH-17), connecting Mumbai and Goa to the north and Mangalore and Kochi to the south. Konkan Railway serves Udupi railway station (code UD) with connections to Mumbai, Bangalore, and Mangalore; Rajdhani Express stops here. Vistadome Express with rotating chairs runs through Udupi since 2021, offering views of the Western Ghats. The city is 406 km from Bangalore; the Agumbe Ghats road route is considered scenic but challenging.

When to Go
The best time to visit is October to March when weather is cool, with daytime temperatures of 30-35°C and nights around 25°C. April and May are hot, while June to September brings the monsoon — expect sudden heavy rain and high humidity (1350 mm rainfall in July alone). April-May offers ripe mangoes; monsoon makes the area lush and green. Yakshagana performances and Paryaya ceremony (January 18 on even-numbered years) draw cultural visitors.

Food and Drink
Udupi is a vegetarian paradise. Mitra Samaja near the Krishna temple has served authentic dishes like golibaje, dosa, idli, and medu wada for over 50 years, accompanied by filter coffee or badam milk. Kushi on NH66 is famous for 20+ years for dishes like goli bhaje, masala dosa, and grape juice or lassi. Diana (60 years old) serves Channa Pathora, Banana Bonda, and the famous Gadbad ice cream. For non-vegetarian options, Thamboolam near Kalpana Theatre offers kori rotti. Manipal has student-oriented options like 7 Bees Cafe and Dollops. Alcohol is limited in Udupi proper (temple town); head to Manipal for bars like Cocks n' Mocks or Dee Tee.

Things to Do
Sri Krishna Temple and Mutt on Ratha Beedi is free to enter (5AM-9:30PM), with free lunch served at three Bhojana Shaalas. Kanaka's Window (Kanakana Kindi) allows devotees to see the westward-facing deity — legend says devotee Kanakadasa was denied entry so the Lord turned to face his window. St Mary's Island costs about ₹300 return boat ticket from Malpe Beach (8:30AM-4:30PM, leaves when 30+ visitors gather). Malpe Beach itself is free and clean with sunset views of the island. Kapu Beach (Kaup) has a lighthouse (₹10) 22 km from Manipal. For adventure, Seethanadi Nature Camp (36 km east) offers whitewater rafting July-January; Kudlu Theertha near Agumbe is a forest trek to waterfalls.

Safety
Udupi is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply: watch belongings in crowded markets and bus stands. The monsoon season (June-September) brings sudden heavy rain that can cause localized flooding — avoid trekking during this period unless experienced. Beach swimming should be done with caution as lifeguard services are limited. Udyavar Pithrodi island has pollution from nearby fishing mills.

Connectivity
Mobile coverage is good with major Indian carriers (Airtel, Jio, BSNL) available. WiFi is common in hotels and restaurants, especially in Manipal near the university. Power plugs follow Indian standard (Type C/D/M) at 230V/50Hz.

Etiquette
As a temple town, dress modestly when visiting the Sri Krishna Temple — shoulders and knees should be covered. Remove footwear before entering temple premises. Photography may be restricted inside the sanctum. During Paryaya (January 18 on even years), the town sees increased religious activity and visitors. The area around Ratha Beedi temple can get very crowded during festivals.
